Applied Semiotics Vol. 2: Portraiture. Publication.

A study of portraiture through culture, design, chronology and geography.

Applied Semiotics Vol. 2: Portraiture, a new publication and exhibition presented as part of Melbourne Design Week 2026. From formal painting to emoji, the portrait remains one of design’s most potent codes. In a time where likeness can be monetised, replicated and entirely fabricated, portraiture becomes both mirror and marketplace.

This exhibition and publication launch marks the second chapter of an ongoing research project by The Company You Keep, examining the mutability of visual language and cultural norms. Portraiture investigates how portraits are constructed, distorted and circulated. Spanning photography, sculpture, digital art and print, the exhibition examines the portrait as a shifting interface between identity, technology and society.

The performing arts trade in shared experiences, evoking awe, discomfort, joy and curiosity. At their best, they hold undivided attention. From dance ensembles to live music acts, performers learn to read their audiences deeply and build a world around them. This panel explores what brands can learn from their craft, from seeing audiences as active participants to sustaining a clear directorial vision. Together, these principles offer brands a framework for deeper emotional and cultural fluency.l
