Brett Lemin delivered a timely and eye-opening session at Waste 2026 on Australia’s fuel crisis — or as he called it, toilet paper 2.0.

As Executive Director of the Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association of NSW and ACT, Brett brought deep industry knowledge to the conversation, with experience spanning waste and recycling, environmental sustainability, policy, regulation, research and cross-sector collaboration.

He spoke about the real impact rapid fuel price increases have on councils, organisations and essential service providers, particularly when costs rise quickly and without warning.

In March and April, the sharp increase in fuel prices added around half a million dollars per day in extra fuel costs to the sector, creating major pressure for the organisations responsible for keeping communities moving and services running.

A powerful reminder that waste and resource recovery does not operate in isolation. Fuel, transport, supply chains, batteries and broader policy pressures all play a role in the challenges faced by councils and industry every day.

A big thank you to Tyre Stewardship Australia, Silver Sponsor of Waste Conference 2026 🛞♻️🇦🇺

As Australia’s tyre product steward, TSA works with industry, government, researchers and communities to reduce tyre waste and create more environmental, social and economic value across the tyre supply chain.

Their work with project partners is helping turn used tyres into practical new products and infrastructure, right here in Australia. From roads and civil applications to innovative projects with partners like Porous Lane, TSA is supporting real-world solutions that keep valuable materials in use and out of landfill.

And did you know old tyres can become everything from bottle openers and coasters to gym flooring? A great reminder that circular economy solutions can be practical, surprising and genuinely useful.

Thank you to Tyre Stewardship Australia for supporting Waste 2026, and for showing us so many brilliant examples of what can be made right here in Australia from old tyres!

NALG is creating tomorrows solution today.

They're rethinking organic waste management by turning what was once seen as a burden into valuable resources, including nutrient-rich compost, biogas, biochar and liquid fertilisers.

With more than 37 years of combined industry experience across NALG and their technology partners, their work focuses on designing, building and operating advanced organic waste management facilities that reduce landfill waste, minimise greenhouse gas emissions and support a more circular future.

Their facilities are designed to be self-sustaining, producing their own energy and water to reduce reliance on external resources.
