Inward Bound

Inward Bound Inward Bound is a non-profit, student-led annual team and navigation-based endurance running event for ANU Students

Inward Bound (IB) is a navigation-based endurance footrace held annually in the natural surrounds of Australia national capital, Canberra. IB challenges the physical and emotional stamina of participants in a unique format that is both safe and exciting. Participants, in teams of four, must use traditional map-and-compass navigation skills to plan the route, covering distances between 30 and 100 k

m, that will lead them to end point. The mountain trails and tracks on which IB courses are set are all in the ACT or NSW mountain areas surrounding Canberra. IB is an important event for building the Australian National University (ANU) community and therefore, participants must be either staff or students of the ANU. Traditionally, there are over 200 participants, who on arrival at end point are greeted by more than 500 delighted and enthusiastic supporters. Many former participants acknowledge the significance of IB suggesting it is a rare and life-changing opportunity to experience and appreciate the local environment in a unique, engaging and unparalleled way. Leadership, teamwork, resilience, self-confidence and motivation are just some of the qualities participants have the opportunity to develop both during the months of rigorous pre-event training and the trials and tribulations encountered and surmounted during the race. IB by its very nature, promotes fitness, healthy living, dietary and environmental awareness. IB has a long history, having endured more than 50 annual events. As a corollary, there are thousands of participants who regard their IB experience as a memorable and significant component of their ANU, Canberra and Australian experience. Safety is of paramount importance for the IB race organisers, which means all teams must carry safety equipment for use in emergencies. Whilst GPS tracking and communication equipment is supplied by race organisers, participants must provide other essentials including first aid supplies and cold and wet weather clothing. Race HQ monitors all teams closely and works with local emergency authorities to ensure appropriate recourse are available for any emergencies. IB could not proceed without the generosity of landholders, who provide permission for runners to follow tracks and trails through their properties. This generosity is greatly appreciated as it rewards participants with breathtaking scenery and challenging route choices. Race organisers in their quest for this private land access ensure that participants operate under the ‘leave no trace’ principle. Similarly, race organisers and participants are highly appreciative of the support offered by the event sponsors. The support of the wider community ensures all aspects of IB are delivered to the highest standard in order to uphold the prestigious reputation and the growing historical significance to the ANU and the nation’s capital.

And now, it all comes down to the final eight on the committee team this year. With dedication, creativity, and serious drive, these individuals are ready to finish strong and make this year one to remember.

Cathy D**g | Event Officer
Hi! My names Cathy and I am super excited to be events coordinator again this year. I am hoping to plan a lit trivia and afters and possibly organise medals again! Feel free to message me if you have any ideas on what events you might want to see for IB 😙

Ariel Dalton | Send-off Coordinator
Hey everyone! My names Ariel (she/her) and I am your Send Off Coordinator for this years Race Day! With a history of being a CC at Wright Hall in 2024, to one third of the communications / soical media squadron of last year, I'm excited to work with you and see what this year has in stall! You want to question IB comittment - I successfully completed the role of comms last year from the hostel rooms of over 25 countries across Europe, participating in IBLive, being a host of IBTV, and keeping you all well informed. See you throughout the year and don't hesitate to contact me. Comment which college you want Send Off to be at this year!

Emma Lewis | Spectators Coordinator
I’m Emma! the Spectators Coordinator for IB 2026! Which basically means my role is looking after spectators over the IB weekend, and helping colleges get residents to and from the endpoint. For the past two years, I’ve been a college coordinator for IB. Fun fact: I’m fully qualified to set up and run a high ropes course.

Elentari Berryman | Volunteers Coordinator
Hi I’m Elentári and I’m Volunteers Coordinator this year! You might recognise me as the Outreach and Inclusion Coordinator last year, or ex-Wamburun Head Coach and 3x runner. I’m so excited to get everyone involved in IB however possible and drum up some hype amongst colleges! A fun fact about me is I know where IB is and you (probably) don’t 😉

Lucy Woolnough | EP Coordinator
Hi everyone, I'm Lucy your Endpoint Co-ordinator this year! As it says on the box - I'm the one in charge of organising what endpoint will look like when we finally get to race day. As a dedicated BnG mock driver, and last year a Div 3 chaperone, torturing blindfolded runners on the way out to drop with 2000's pop music has been a beloved pastime of mine. This year however, my job requires me to put aside my old ways, and make sure the runner's torture ends when they reach the finish line. I look forward to seeing you all at endpoint this year 🙂

Alex Brett | Race Engagement
Alex here; and I’m ready to engage your eyes for another fantastical year in the perilous and uncertain race we all love to hate, Inward Bound. As your engagement team this year, Justin and myself are ready to engorge on over engineered route choices, inappropriate team bets, and irrelevant trivia about the course this year with our live coverage on the day (IB-TV, IB Live) as well as some surprises through the year. Hold your horses, and put your ducks into order, this isn’t one to miss.

Justin Cementon | Race Engagement
Hi everyone! My name is Justin and I am super excited to work as one of your IB Engagement Coordinators this year. After a few years running and coaching IB with Bruce and Griffin (the 2024 and 2025 champions respectively 😳), I am super keen to work with Alex on enriching the IB experience for coaches, runners, and spectators alike. Big plans are in the works for IB TV and Endpoint for what will be the most thrilling IB Racing Event to date Please reach out to us if you think you have revolutionary ideas on how to make IB more entertaining for participants and spectators alike in 2026 😁

Maxine Wu | Coms & Media
Hello! I’m Maxine, and I’m excited to bring you all things IB-related, online. Spectated my 1st year, coached twice and ran three times for the B&G Redbacks. The pipeline to joining IB Committee was almost-inevitable. This year, as the Comms and Media Coordinator, I’m looking forward to capturing the best of IB across our social media platforms. From keeping you updated on events run by the other portfolios, to interviewing participants throughout the event, I hope to showcase all the fun, energy, and memorable moments that make IB so special.

Here, we have another seven incredible individuals, ready to bring their own energy to the committee. With fresh ideas, strong teamwork, and a passion for making Inward Bound unforgettable, they’re here to keep the momentum going.

Dom Lee | Outreach and Inclusion
Hello! I’m Dom (she/her) and I’m super excited to be this year’s Outreach and Inclusion Officer! I’ve been involved in IB since 2022, both running in the event for Wright Hall and being part of committee last year. I hope to make this year’s IB as inclusive, accessible and, of course, as fun as possible! A fun fact about me is I still can’t use a compass after all these years.

Hamish Robertson | Scrutineering Officer
Hi there, Hamish here, your 2026 scrutineering coordinator. I'm ready to ensure no stone is left unturned when it comes to checking gear for mock drops and the event itself. When I first heard the words "blindfolded" and "bush" in the same sentence describing IB, I was hooked and joined the cult without any hesitation. I have since run IB three times (2022-2024) and coached in 2024. Now I have moved to road marathons, lots of hikes in nature and a few ultras here and there but nothing too crazy. If you are ever unsure whether your gear will keep you alive in a life-threatening scenario, I'm always willing to help!

Harry Silke | Sponsorship Coordinator
My name is Harry and I am one of the sponsorship coordinators this year. I've been involved in IB for the past 4 years as a coach at Wamburun hall and now I live in Lutruwita (Tasmania) studying marine biology and doing lots of trail running and hiking so if you need a hike recommendation let me know! (I will suggest the Mount Anne circuit). My role is focused on getting the best brands to work with us so you can get the most out of the sport and have the most fun on race day!

Oliver Blyth | Sponsorship Coordinator
Hi everyone! I’m Oliver and I’m one of the sponsorship coordinators this year. I’ve been involved in IB since I ran in 2022 and have been obsessed ever since, coaching at YKB for the past two years. I’m so excited to be working behind the scenes to help make IB accessible for all! Who wouldn’t want to sponsor the best event of the year!

Lincoln Blank, Fergus Grave, Jacob George | Admin, Safety, Legal, Div X
Meet the dream team: Lincoln, Fergus, and Jacob — your Admin/Div X officers for Inward Bound. Lincoln brings structure, spreadsheets, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. Fergus specialises in morale, mischief, and asking “what’s the worst that could happen?” right before it happens. Jacob sits somewhere in between, keeping things (mostly) on track while pretending everything is under control. Together, they’re responsible for organisation, coordination, and the occasional miracle — fuelled by caffeine, questionable decisions, and a shared belief that it’ll all work out in the end.

In our last post, we introduced the Race Directors. Now, it’s time to meet the rest of the executive team. Kicking things off, this year's executive team brings top-tier organisation, unmatched energy, and a shared passion for Inward Bound 💙. They’re ready to take things to the next level.

Abby Kidston | Executive Officer
Hello everyone! I’m Abby and I’m super excited to be the Executive Officer this year! When I first moved to ANU, I thought I had no chance of ever being able to run IB, as I had no running ability whatsoever. Thankfully I decided to give one training a go and since have fallen absolutely in love with IB and trail running! I’ve been lucky enough to be involved as a runner and coach at Bruce and Wright, and I’m really excited to be helping organise the event this year on committee. I hope we can give everyone an awesome, crazy and life-changing experience!

Martin Duong | Course Setter
Hello! I'm Martin. I love IB (have run three times for Wright, and was on Committee last year). I hope you enjoy the course we're setting. Darcy and I have many ideas cooking.

Darcy Webster-Jones | Course Setter
Hi I’m Darcy and I am the other course setter this year along with Martin! I have run for Burgmann for the last 3 years and coached last year. I’m very excited for runners to experience the wonders of the 2026 course. Let’s take IB to new heights!

Jacob Gome | Mock Safety & Coaches
I first got involved in IB in 2021 as a first year at Bruce Hall. Safe to say, I was immediately hooked and made IB a key part of my personality. Since then, I have run and coached Bruce Hall in 2022-2024 and last year was part of the Mock Safety team. IB has given me so many great memories and there is no other event like it anywhere in the world! I can’t wait to be a part of the team this year to help deliver another great IB!

Simon Little | Mock Safety & Coaches
Simon began IB with Wright Hall in 2021, and has never finished an IB in his whole career. He coached for Wright in 2023 and has been doing ex-ressie things since then, including setting a bunch of of Mocks. He is taking this Mock Drop experience into his role as Mock Safety.

Pat O'Connor | Mock Safety & Coaches
Hi I’m Pat, one of your three Mock Safety Officers and Coach Coordinators this year! My IB story actually started a bit later than most. In fact, for my first two years at uni I had zero involvement in running and thought it was bizarre that people did such a silly thing at all. Fast forward to today, I’ve run three IBs for Fenner, coached for one, and become obsessed with running and in particular, this funny little event we call Inward Bound. Armed now with a passion for maps, trail running and hanging out in the bush at ungodly hours, I am super keen to join the organising committee for an event that’s given me so much! I can’t wait to meet and support all the coaches and help deliver arguably the most fun part of the IB calendar: Mock Drops!

29/01/2026

With deep IB experience, fresh energy and a very realistic understanding of how chaotic this event can get, this year’s Inward Bound Race Directors are stepping up to run the show. Between them they bring years of running, coaching, safety and logistics experience, and are ready to deliver an IB that’s challenging, welcoming and backed by a lengthy risk assessment.

Ben Silke (he/him)
Ben wanted to do IB the minute he heard about it and his involvement in IB is as old as Wamburun itself. Having coached Wamburun through the ‘covid years’ he retired from the sport. However, retirement is boring and IB is fun so he’s back with more love for IB than ever. He’s keen to work to bring a contemporary and inclusive 2026 Inward Bound, albeit with a few interesting twists.

Hannah Lovlin (she/her)
Hannah started out as an optimistic first year drawn by the delightful opportunity to run around with friends in the bush. Since then, she's had experience with running and coaching at Fenner, two IB DNF's, Mock Safety in 2025 and developing a serious love for big adventures in beautiful places. But we all know her first year optimism has never really diminished and these days it truly is about running around with friends in the beautiful (unknown!) bush. She's excited to make 2026 IB the most welcoming, safest and thrilling event yet.

Matt Rodier (he/him)
Matt’s Inward Bound story began at the college level in 2022, where he first caught the IB bug and immediately developed a concerning tendency to plan mocks that require an ever-growing safety briefing. After deciding to skip the part where you actually participate, Matt wisely pivoted into committee life, where his love of organised chaos and safety logistics truly flourished. He took on the role of Spectators Coordinator in 2023 and Endpoint Coordinator in 2024, discovering that calm usually arrives after the planning. Upon hearing the words “do you want to run Div X next year?”, Matt decided to take the easy way out and instead RD again. He’s back in 2026 to keep things safe, slightly unhinged, and understands that pulling bogged coaches out of the mud is now part of the role.

Planning is already underway, and we’re very keen for you all to see what’s coming for Inward Bound 2026.
Committee Application to be released in the coming weeks but in the meantime feel free to get in touch either via Facebook or at [email protected]
