Japan’s Sally Matsubara set the 40–44 women’s age group course record at the 2024 7Cairns Marathon, running 3:07:05.

She encourages other runners to chase it down.

“Records are meant to be broken, and it’s exciting to see others chasing new goals. It pushes all of us to become better runners.”

While the warm winter conditions added to the challenge, Sally says the waterfront course and the support from volunteers made the race especially memorable.

“The tropical weather was tough, but that’s what made the finish line even more rewarding.”

For Sally, the looped course mattered more than she expected.

It meant seeing her family, who had travelled from Japan to support her and were able to cheer her on several times throughout the race.

Teruaki Yagura arrived in Cairns from Japan with very little margin for error. A delayed flight meant there was a real chance he wouldn’t make the start line at all. He slept for just three hours on the plane the night before the race. Still, he didn’t give up on making the start line.

Teruaki went on to set the 45–49 age group course record at the 2025 7Cairns Marathon, finishing in 2:48:44.

His advice for runners hoping to break his record?

“I believe that if you stay the night before and get enough sleep, you can definitely break my record!”

Aside from the flat course and scenery, what stayed with him most about the experience was the support on course.

“The cheers and encouragement from the spectators and volunteers really gave me strength and became a wonderful memory.”

矢倉輝明選手は、日本からケアンズに到着した時、ほとんどミスを許されない状況でした。フライトの遅延により、スタートラインに立てない可能性も十分にありました。レース前夜、飛行機の中ではわずか3時間しか眠れませんでした。それでも、彼はスタートラインに立つことを諦めませんでした。

輝明選手は、2025年7月ケアンズマラソンで45～49歳部門の大会記録を樹立し、2時間48分44秒で完走しました。

記録更新を目指すランナーへのアドバイスは？

「前日にしっかり寝て、しっかり睡眠を取れば、僕の記録も必ず破れると思います！」

平坦なコースと景色に加え、この経験で最も印象に残っているのは、コース上での応援です。

「観客やボランティアの方々の声援と励ましが、本当に力になり、素晴らしい思い出になりました。」
