Now that the dust has settled on the Burnie New Year’s Carnival 🏃‍♂️🎉, it’s time to reflect on some outstanding performances by local runners, highlighted by two of Burnie’s most promising young sprinters producing eye-catching results.
Fifteen-year-old Nash Hammond claimed victory in the 70m Maiden Handicap 🥇, while 14-year-old Jayla Olm became one of the youngest-ever finalists in the Women’s Gift ⭐.
Other notable local performances included Piper Sharman (first in the Women’s 800m), Darcy Kennelly (second in the 70m Maiden), Ellie Rayner (second in the Women’s 400m) and James Frankcombe (second in the Tasmanian Mile).
Competing in open company for the first time, Hammond backed up a strong heat with an equally impressive final, stopping the clock at 8.34 seconds — 0.3 seconds quicker than his heat time. With only around 30 minutes between races, the teenager said the quick turnaround helped prevent him from becoming overawed by the occasion.
“It was amazing to win my first professional event on my home track,” Hammond said.
“I’ve always loved running at West Park.”
While Olm finished fifth in the Women’s Gift, it was an excellent performance against a high-quality field and capped off a strong first carnival series. Her campaign included a dead heat for first place in the Rosebery Gift on December 20, and she finished just 0.32 seconds behind the Burnie Gift winner.

One of the real The highlights of last Wednesday's Burnie New Year's Eve Carnival was United States cyclist Graeme Frislie’s devastating final two laps from scratch to claim a fourth consecutive Burnie Wheel, something no other rider has achieved in the long and storied history of the event.
While he did not have much chance to reflect on the win, particularly straight after the race, Frislie understood the significance of the occasion.
“Over the years I have watched so many videos of old wheel races out here and to be able to do it once was super special and I know the (competitors’) numbers are nowhere near what they used to be back in the day but to deliver another one is still very special,” Frislie said.
To add another first to the evening Frislie’s win came only about 30 minutes after his partner, South Australian Sports Institute rider Odette Lynch, claimed the Women’s Wheel - by holding off a determined Amalia Langham - making them the first couple to claim the Wheels in the same year.
Both are aiming to return in 2026 and we cannot wait to have them.

And we agree - they were particularly special. Thanks to Josh and the team at Spark Fireworks for making it happen

Three Burnie Athletic Club members were recognised for their distinguish and long service at the Burnie New Year’s Ever Carnival on December 31 with life membership badges and certificates presented by Board Chair Joe Vaszocz and Burnie City Council Mayor Cr Teeny Brumby.
Denzil Munday, Des O’Shannessey and Gerard Leary were celebrated for a level of commitment which spans more than three decades each.
Though possibly less visible than other members, in his unobtrusive, quiet, but measured way, Des has been instrumental in a huge number of successful ventures and outcomes for the BAC, particularly from a cycling standpoint.
He served as a commissaire and assistant clerk of the course for cycling, and used his influence and standing in the cycling community to attract a host of elite cyclists to the carnivals over many years.
During Gerard’s 31 years with the club he has been pedestrian manager for 27 and Tasmanian Athletic League and Sports Carnival Association of Tasmania delegate for all that time.
This followed a 20-year stint as a competitor.
He has also served as a club vice-president and committee and a driving force behind the junior NuGen series.
Denzil had a distinguished career as a successful azeman before playing an instrumental role in ensuring the sport remained an integral part of the carnival, a role which continues until this day.
He also served as president of the BAC from 2002-2004
Mick Hardy – who like the other recipients has held a variety of roles during his time with the club but most notably by ensuring that the events ran according to the tight time schedule – was unable to attend on Wednesday due to a prior commitment and will be presented with his badge and certificate at a later date.
