🏳️🌈 The 2026 Census is happening tomorrow, Tuesday 11 August, and there’s an important option LGBTQIA+ people should know about.
Usually, one person in a household completes the Census for everyone. But you can request a separate Census form if you want to complete your Census privately or separately from other members of your household.
Even if a household form has already been submitted with information about you, you can still request your own form to complete separately. The ABS can use the information you provide on your own form and disregard the information about you that was included on the household form.
This might be important if you’re concerned that someone else could provide information about you that isn’t accurate, such as your gender, s*xual orientation, s*x recorded at birth, religion or other personal information.
For example, you may:
🏳️⚧️ not be out to everyone in your household
🏳️🌈 have family members who don’t know or understand how you identify
💜 want to make sure your answers reflect how you identify
🔒 have privacy concerns about another household member completing the form for you
You can request a separate form from the ABS.

Accurate LGBTQIA+ data matters. It helps build a clearer picture of our communities and supports planning for health, community and other services.
Your identity. Your answers. Your Census. 🏳️🌈
