Improv Yourself is in full swing, with so many wonderful people coming along to our sessions. If you’d like to work on your confidence, meet new people and laugh more than you have all week, come along to one of our Thursday sessions at Bull Creek Community Centre! Hello improvers!

Time flies when you’re doing improv! Tonight will be our third session for the year, and we have already had two wonderful sessions.

Last week, it was our fearless leader’s 40th birthday! We celebrated with cake, balloons and some Chris themed improv games. For our main game, we played ‘Hot Seat’, in which one player sat at the side of the stage watching the scene unfold. The other players started the scene, using prompts the player in the hot seat was not told. When the hot seat player felt they knew what was happening, they could join the scene.

Hello improvers!

I hope you are all having a wonderful start to the new year. We had a wonderful Christmas dinner and improv session. It is always a highlight of the year, celebrating the amazing community we have at Improv Yourself.

We are currently on break, but will return on Thursday, 22nd of January.

Hello improvers!

I hope you are all surviving in this heat! We have had a great few weeks at Improv Yourself, and we have more coming up!

This Thursday will be our annual Christmas improv session. If you would like to join us for Christmas dinner, come along to Bull Creek Community Centre at 6pm with a plate to share. If you would just like to join for improv, we will start at 7pm as usual.

We also have our end of year show coming up! Join us as an audience member this Sunday 21st Decemeber at 5.00pm, at the Bull Creek Community Centre (the room next to the one we usually use).

Hello improvers!

As always, we have had a great couple of weeks at Improv Yourself!

We start every session with a name game, to help us get to know each other’s names and start the session with something easy. From there, we do physical and mental warm-ups, with games that get us moving around the room and thinking creatively.

We then ease into scene work, with some quick two player scenes or another game that starts introducing some improv skills. This is usually followed by a break, in which we chat and eat snacks.

After break, we get into the main scene work games. These can be longer two player scenes, or larger games with four or five players. These longer games give people a chance to develop their characters and stories a bit more and are great fun to watch!

Hello improvers!

A spook-tacular time was had last week at Improv Yourself! We love an excuse to dress up, so Halloween was the perfect time to get a bit creative, or stick on the random moustache.

Included in the evening was a game of "Trick or Treat". Two players got up and began a scene using a prompt from the audience. During their scene, a facilitator would call either 'trick' or 'treat'. A trick meant the player would have to accuse the other player of something, while a treat meant they had to give the other player a gift. It was interesting to see how the scenes evolved based on these prompts!

Hello improvers!

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks at Improv Yourself.

One of the games we played was called "Third Wheel". In this game, three players get up on stage. Two of them begin a conversation, while the third person looks on. The third person can react to the conversation, but cannot speak. It is a great way to get people thinking about conveying thoughts and emotions non-verbally.

Hello improvers!

We have had a wonderful couple of weeks at Improv Yourself!

Last week, we played a popular game called “Oscar Winning Moment”. This is a two player game, in which two people create a short scene. During the scene, one player has to break from the scene, approach the audience, and reveal their inner monologue. This is helped by some inspirational music, which influences the tone of the monologue. The player then returns to the scene, and after a while, the other player gives their monologue. It is a lot of fun to see how the different character motivations and thoughts change the direction of the scene.

If you would like to join us, we will be at Bull Creek Community Centre, this Thursday at 7pm.

Hello improvers!

We had a wonderful night last night at Improv Yourself. It was wonderful to see lots of familiar faces and a few new ones!

One of the games that was very much enjoyed was a game that had two pairs of players on stage at the same time. One pair would begin a scene and, when the bell rang, they would freeze and the other pair would start a completely different scene. When the bell rang again, the first pair would continue their scene, but this time they would have jumped to a different point in the future. An audience favourite scene was a pair who jumped from being pregnant, to parents of newborns, to divorce, to making peace with each other and finally, death.

Hello improvers!

Recently, we played a game called “Scene Three Ways’. In this game, six people get on to the stage, divided into pairs. The first pair then act out a scene based on a one word suggestion. The following two pairs then re-enact the same scene, but this time using a different style or genre, such as soap opera or comedy.
