Great Outback Treasure Hunt 2026 Update: This has been a funny ol year for events across Australia and with the current economic climate creating uncertainty across the board, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Great Outback Treasure Hunt until 2027.

Rather than push ahead in choppy waters, we are charting a steadier course so the treasure Hunt can return in full pirate spirit, and ready to deliver a cracking good time for regional communities, local businesses and the Royal Flying Doctor Service - Queensland Section. The goal is simple, make sure the next voyage is worth the wait and lands exactly where it needs to.

We are incredibly grateful for the support shown so far from sponsors, Banana Shire Council and community partners, it has meant a great deal and reinforces just how special this event can be when it sets sail again.

For now the maps are rolled up, the compasses are resting and the pirate hats are safely stored, ready for 2027 when Banana Shire erupts back onto the map with cannon fire, buried clues, dusty trails, and a whole crew of troublemaking treasure hunters chasing gold under the outback sun.

Lowes Petroleum Service are back on board for The Great Outback Treasure Hunt 2026, and it is great to have them with us again. This is an event built around the road, long distances, small towns, and teams making their way right across the region, stopping, refuelling, grabbing a feed and pushing on to the next challenge. Lowes are part of that journey in a very real way.

What makes this event special is not just the fun of it, although there is plenty of that, it is what it brings with it. Regional communities are doing it tough, and something as simple as people coming through, spending money, having a laugh, and sharing their experience creates a genuine lift for local businesses and the towns themselves. It all adds up, and it matters. Lowes stepping in again and backing the event helps make that happen, and it is support like this that keeps things moving in the right direction.

A bucket list quest across dust and sky,
With riddles to crack and miles to fly.

Only 50 crews will answer the bell.
No late boarding once we close the gate,
If you miss the tide, you tempt your fate.

Mark it well upon yer chart, the 26th and 27th of September 2026, for that be the weekend the compass spins and The Great Outback Treasure Hunt sets sail once more in search of glory, grit and gold.

Ten thousand dollars lies waiting for the crew brave enough to claim it, yet the true treasure be greater still. Every mile travelled, every riddle solved, every cheer at the final gathering helps keep the Royal Flying Doctor Service - Queensland Section and Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia soaring above the vast red sea of our inland, wings steady against the wind, saving lives from the farthest stations and the loneliest tracks.

We hunt for treasure, aye, but we sail for something finer.

The map remains locked in the captain’s chest and the land that shall host us is yet to be revealed. New shores await, new towns to stir, new legends to carve into the dust. The mystery be part of the magic, and only those who follow close shall be first to glimpse the X that marks the spot.

So gather yer kin, rally yer mates, call aboard the young deckhands and the seasoned sea dogs alike. This be no ordinary weekend away, it be a bucket list voyage across the outback where laughter rings, engines rumble and community spirit rises like a full tide beneath a southern moon.
