Its been a long time coming, but we finally have a functional parkrun in the Highlands.
We hope to see everyone at our new location at the Botanic Gardens off Old South Road by 7:50am tomorrow morning (ready for an 8am start).
We've arranged a break in the weather, so it should be perfect for running.
Parking is a work in progress. We are expecting quite a few out-of-towners to join us to christen the course, so if you live close by you might want to jog down as a warmup.
Please pay attention to our carpark marshalls as they attempt to tetris the small carpark area with as many cars as possible. You can also choose to park along Kangaloon or Old South Rd.
There are currently no toilets at the start location, so if you are travelling a distance you might want to stop off at a public toilet on the way through.
For new parkrunners - you are very welcome! Just remember to register at the parkrun.com.au website and print off a barcode before you come down. You can also keep a copy on your iPhone, but there is nothing better than having a couple of paper copies in the car or wallet in case your phone barcode doesn't work on the day.
If you are planning on bringing a child in a pram, or running with a dog on a short leash, please remember we may possibly have very large numbers, on a narrow course, so please position yourself at the back.
Dogs need to be on a short leash, with no waist harnesses (canine cross etc), and only one dog per parkrunner.
Looking forward to seeing everyone back up and parkrunning tomorrow - you are all guaranteed a PB !!!!

Here is the new SHBG parkrun course (thank you Tristan for the excellent map!)
The course is fairly self explanatory.
We start on the cycle path at the first telegraph pole along Kangaloon Road (marked as a green line on the map). We run down the cycle path in an easterly direction, past the entrance to the Botanic Gardens and across a small wooden pedestrian bridge until you come to a triangular 'roundabout' (or garden bed). Stay on the bike path and keep left, as you head north along the bike path and around the eastern edge of the botanic gardens.
The first turnaround is just near Alice Avenue at the 1km mark. Turn around here and head back along the same bike path until you are back at the 'roundabout'. Keep left again and follow the bike path east out towards Boardman Road to the second turnaround. This turnaround is at about the 2km mark. Turn here and head back along the bike path to the roundabout for the third and last time, keeping left around the roundabout and heading back towards the start line; back over the small bridge and back past the Botanic Gardens entrance. When you reachTurn around the START line you will have completed 3 kms.
Go past the start line and around the corner, staying on the bike path, and heading north up Old South Road. Just after the corner is another wooden bridge, and just after you cross the bridge we have created a small 500m 'gentle rise' in case you were bored of the flat terrain. Keep following the bike path all the way until the final turnaround, located up near Emily Circuit, staying on the bike path the whole time. At the turnaround, you should have completed 4kms. Turnaround and head back to the START line. This area of the course is undulating, but the last 500m is pretty well downhill and designed for a fast finish.
The finish line is located with the START line.
When you finish, make sure you stay in the grass section and try not to wander into the carpark with post-run blindness (otherwise we will be looking for a third course!)
Keep in mind the cycle path is fairly narrow, and most mornings we will be sharing the course with other pedestrians and bikes. We will try to warn them as best we can (especially for the start) but please keep left as much as you can and warn other pedestrians if you are about to run up and scare them. It would also be wise to self-seed at the start line. If you are not planning on a sub-20 parkrun, might be best not to take one of the front positions!

Only 3 weeks to go!
Just a reminder that our new parkrun course in the Highlands comes with its own special name - Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens parkrun.
And it comes with its own page.
So make sure you like our new page so that we can communicate with you on all things parkrun.
Our original Bowral parkrun course, website and page will all go into mothballs for a while. Who knows what the future has in store for our old course???
Make sure you check the SHBG parkrun page on a regular basis, as we will be posting regularly in the lead up to our launch event on May 14.
We will also be putting out a call for volunteers - the most important part of any parkrun!

Course check 8 April 2022

A check of the course this afternoon went well with only 3 biggish puddles to contend with. All the debris and tree branches from last week are off the path.

Given the forecast for decreasing rain, we have decided to go ahead with tomorrow’s trial of the new course for anyone interested in attending.

You will get wet shoes so we suggest you bring along a change of shoes for after your run/walk!

Another course check of the wettest part of the track will be done at 7am in the morning and any cancellation will be notified immediately via Facebook.

Please note that this is not an official parkrun event but only a trial - our last trial before our restart in May. Everyone is welcome to join us. Meet at 8am sharp in the carpark at the Southern Highland Botanic Gardens in East Bowral.

We are sad to advise that tomorrow's (2/4/22) trial event is cancelled.
There is water on the path and a lot of debris from the pine trees down the Kangaloon Road leg of the course.
Given the forecast for more showers and wind, we believe it is safest to cancel the trial.
Sorry to disappoint the regulars and any one else who was planning to attend.
We will be back for our last trial next Saturday 9 April 2022. Please join us then if you would like to try out the course before our restart on 14 May.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe and dry!

Well, our wait is almost over. It's taken a while, but we now have a launch date for our new parkrun course in the Highlands - Saturday 14th May.
Unfortunately, our existing Bowral parkrun course has been closed down after 313 fantastic events over 7 great years and many memories.
We have now developed a new course in Bowral which is located at the Southern Highlands Botanical Gardens.
We now have the honour of having one of the longest parkrun names in the world - with our new parkrun being named Southern Highlands Botanical Gardens parkrun.
We have had a number of test runs on the course and it has been well received.
We have made sure that we incorporated a hill, because everyone loves a hill, and the course is all on concrete bike paths.
Our Bowral parkrun course unfortunately never recovered from the poor weather, with continued flooding and the grass track damaged beyond repair.
We also had some legal issues with mowing the course.
We have the opportunity of returning to the Bowral course in the future if needed, but at the moment it will go into mothballs and we will shift our attention to our new parkrun course.
Everyone that is currently registered with parkrun as a Bowral parkrunner will be automatically transferred to show Southern Highlands Botanical Gardens parkrun as their new Home course.
You will all get the opportunity to set new PBs as this is a totally new event. We will also have a new page and website with a course description and map, so keep an eye out for them.
We are holding two more 'trial' events on the course if you are keen to come down and try out the course - they are over the next two weekends (2nd April and 9th April). They are not official parkrun events, however.
The 9th April will be our last trial event until our Launch Date on the 14th May.
We apologise for the long delay between events - it has been a challenging couple of months, but our Run Directors, under the guidance of our Event Director (Christine Woods), have put in a lot of effort to find a course in our community that is safe and functional in bad weather.
We look forward to welcoming you all back to the parkrun community on Saturday 14th May!
