BRIAN JACKSON / YASIIN BEY @ GIL SCOTT HERON / VIVID SYDNEY. What a treat to see two giants of jazz, funk, soul and hip hop, combine their creative and spiritual forces to celebrate another artist: Gil Scott Heron. All three have been top of our playlists since the early 90s. Very much enjoyed their strong, multi-layered (sometimes modal!) performances of classic GSH tracks such as Winter In America, The Bottle, It’s Your World. Bonus track: Umi Says (performed beyond beautifully by Yasiin / Mos Def). Bonus insights: their soulful narrations about GSH, working together with him and now, each other. There were lots of parallels on race, spirit and elevation that really made our experience a new one, heard through the lense of the old standards. Thankyou 💖🙌
