Monday Michiru in the house!

Monday Michiru in the house!

Monday Michiru is a singer, songwriter, flautist and producer regarded as one of the pioneers of Japan’s acid-jazz and club-jazz movement. Born in Tokyo in 1963, she grew up surrounded by jazz: her mother is celebrated pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, her father was saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and saxophonist and flautist Lew Tabackin helped raise her. Classically trained on flute, Michiru later turned to singing, songwriting and production.

After an award-winning acting debut in the 1987 Japanese film Hikaru Onna, she concentrated increasingly on music, releasing her first solo album, Mangetsu, in 1991. During the 1990s she became an important figure in Tokyo’s emerging acid-jazz scene, blending jazz, soul, funk, Brazilian music, R&B, hip-hop and dance music into a distinctive cosmopolitan sound. Albums such as Maiden Japan and Jazz Brat helped establish her reputation internationally.

Michiru has also collaborated with leading figures from the Japanese and international club scenes, including DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, United Future Organization and Basement Jaxx. She remains an active recording and performing artist and is widely regarded as an important link between Japanese club culture and the international jazz and soul scenes.

Released 47 long years ago on this day in September 1979 ... one of postpunk's most defining debut albums "Cut' by once all female pioneering collective Official: The Slits thereafter enlisting the drumming services of Siouxsie And The Banshees & legend, Budgie (as well as the little known fact that Neneh Cherry also contributed vocals). 'Cut' remains an important classic including being ranked in The Observer's 100 Greatest British Albums list (amongst other similar accolades). NOTICE; Despite this album cover appearing widely across thousands of retail & news sites throughout the internet, Facebook's censors deem it inappropriate hence our forced editing of the art. Profuse (& embarrassed) apologies to The Slits.

After the passing of Dolly Parton on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, Garth Brooks and his wife, Trisha Yearwood, decided they didn’t want to honor her with just another tribute concert or a few kind words. Instead, they chose to support something that was at the heart of Dolly’s life: getting books into the hands of children. Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995, inspired in part by her father, who never learned to read or write. The program has since provided more than 300 million free books to young children around the world.

So Garth and Trisha came up with a clever idea at their Nashville bar, Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk. They declared September 25 “Dolly Day.” The date is a deliberate reference to Dolly’s legendary song “9 to 5” - 9/25. And here’s the part that makes the gesture special: every dollar of income generated by the bar that day will be donated to children’s literacy and Dolly’s Imagination Library. They intend to make Dolly Day an annual tradition. Trisha summed up the idea perfectly: whatever the cash register says at the end of the day will go toward Dolly’s passion for children’s literacy.

And perhaps that’s the most fitting way to remember Dolly. She spent decades turning her success into opportunities for other people, especially children who might otherwise never have had access to books. Now, even after her death, her name will continue helping children discover stories, imagination and dreams. As Garth Brooks put it, “Dolly may be the perfect example of if you spend your whole life loving, you WILL live forever.”
