Set in a tight-knit Dominican American community in The Bronx, the film follows Rico (Juan Collado), a young hustler selling bootleg “nutcracker” cocktails, chasing summer adventures, and navigating messy teenage love with Destiny (Destiny Checo). When Destiny moves in with his family, their apartment becomes a chaotic stage for laughter, heartbreak, and the harsh lessons of growing up fast in a city that never waits.

Teeming with street-cast talent, Vargas delivers a raw, authentic, and tender portrait of urban life. With humour, grit, and intimacy, Mad Bills to Pay introduces a filmmaker whose vision is impossible to ignore.

We’ll Be Singing by September – Sydney Latin American Film Festival Film Screening with support from Inner West Council at Road Community Organisation

Last night’s screening of We’ll Be Singing by September was a stirring tribute to music’s power in resistance and cultural survival. The documentary, produced by Chilean artist Nano Stern, explores the Nueva Canción movement—a fusion of folk tradition and political defiance that shaped Chile’s history. Rare footage of Víctor Jara and others highlighted how art can challenge oppression while preserving identity.

The post-screening Q&A with Nano Stern deepened the conversation, connecting Chile’s past to global struggles for justice. What made the event truly special was its celebration of multicultural exchange—live performances, traditional food, and a diverse audience reinforced how art bridges divides.

More than a historical record, this film is a universal lesson in resilience. SLAFF and lounge Cine Lounge created a space where storytelling, music, and solidarity converged—proving that the fight for justice has a soundtrack, and its echoes are felt worldwide.
