In December 2022, we were granted permission by the Royal Collection Trust, St James’s Palace, to use images of The Andamooka Opal, including for promotion of the 2027 National Opal Symposium. The magnificent 203-carat Andamooka Opal was discovered in 1949 and presented to Queen Elizabeth II during her 1954 Australian tour. It was later set into this spectacular diamond necklace.

A large-format image of the Andamooka Opal is also on permanent display at the Andamooka Underground Art Gallery, with separate permission granted by St James’s Palace and the Royal Collection Trust for its public display.

A big thanks to the Hon David Ridgway, then Agent-General for South Australia, and his office for helping us secure the permission.

We’ll be sharing more of Andamooka’s opal story as we head towards three big events:

Opal Evolution III: Light from Deep Time
Andamooka, Saturday: 3 October 2026

Fire & Rainbow: South Australian Opal, Gem and Mineral Show
South Australian Museum, Adelaide: 11–13 June 2027

13th Australian National Opal Symposium
Andamooka & Roxby Downs: 16–17 June 2027
