Alice Springs Masters Games

Alice Springs Masters Games The Alice Springs Masters Games known as 'The Friendly Games' is back 10-17 October 2026! Registrations are open! Follow us for updates.

In the early 1980s the Australian Sports Commission first suggested an idea of a Masters Games and the philosophy of Masters’ sport. The development of Masters’ sport included an underlying belief that each participant is a champion in his or her own right, as long as the physical and mental attributes for each stage of life have been maintained at their optimum levels. The Northern Territory Government immediately embraced the idea, seeing potential opportunities for economic and social development benefits. In 1986 the first Masters Games event in Australia was held at Alice Springs. The 1986 Alice Springs Masters Games (then called the Central Australian Masters Games) became the second event of its kind to be staged anywhere in the world. The only previous multi-sport Masters Games was the 1985 World Masters in Canada. The Alice Springs Masters Games concept was highly successful and quickly earned the reputation of ‘The Friendly Games’ because of the camaraderie and good spirited nature of the competitors. That spirit is now carried around Australia and overseas by the thousands of people who have experienced the event. The 2023 Alice Springs Master Games will be back 14-21 October!

Meet Bill from the Alice Springs Pistol Club

Precision is key, Bill is bringing it as Pistol Shooting Sport Coordinator. We lined up a few questions so you can get to know him a little better:

🤔 Do you have a preference between precision or rapid-fire shooting?
I do prefer precision shooting; I have been doing it for so long it feels like second nature.

🤔 What is the best score you have achieved?
I once shot a 397 out of 400 which led me to equal third at the national championships for black powder in the 25 metre match.

🤔 What is your favourite distance to shoot?
I don't really have a favourite, 10, 25, 50 meters, anything will do.

🤔 How old do you need to be to Participate in ASMG26?
You need to be at least 35 years old to participate in pistol shooting for the games.

🤔 What makes the pistol shooting range in Alice Springs so unique?
The wildlife around the range is something special, we get kangaroos that stand on top of the hill and graze as we shoot, it's an amazing sight that needs to be seen.

Meet Amanda from the Dead Centre Bowhunters 🏹

As Archery Sport Coordinator, Amanda is helping keep things right on target for the Games. We caught up with her for a few questions so you can get to know her a little better:

🤔 What distance do you enjoy shooting the most?
Any distance really, just as long as it isn't too far to walk to collect my arrow!

🤔 What is your favourite target face or format?
My favourite face is Zombie and my favourite format would be 3D.

🤔 What is the best score you have ever shot?
I once shot a 375 out of 400.

🤔 How old do you need to be to Participate in ASMG26?
You only need to be 20 this year to participate in Archery at the games.

🤔 What makes the archery range in Alice Springs so unique?
The landscape is beautiful; there is one lane in the west MacDonnell rangers where you can see the whole rangers and waterhole. The club has 7 different rangers making the Dead Centre Bowhunters one of the largest clubs in Australia.

Meet Richard from Ten Pin Bowling 🎳

Richard is striking the pins as Sport Coordinator for Tenpin Bowling. We rolled a few questions his way so you can get to know him a little better:

🤔 Funniest moment on the lanes?
I guess the funniest moment for me relates to the 299 game I bowled in the 2014 Alice Springs Masters Games. I bowled the 12th frame and left the ten pin standing, the curse pin for many bowlers. The lane Mechanic, at the time, presented me with the pin that was left standing. I later had the pin engraved.

🤔 Strike or spare focus?
While strikes are the flashiest part of the game and yield the highest potential scores, the true focus for high-scoring bowlers is spares. Strikes are heavily pursued for explosive scoring, but consistent spare shooting is what prevents disastrous “open frames” and anchors your overall average.

🤔 Best game score?
My best score is a perfect 300 game at The Dust Bowl Alice Springs back in 2009. I have also bowled a 299 in the 2014 Alice Springs Masters Games.

🤔 How old do you need to be to Participate in ASMG26?
Previous years the minimum age was 35, however, this year the age has been lowered to 30. Hopefully this will encourage some of the younger bowlers to participate.

🤔 What makes tenpin bowling in Alice Springs so unique?
With the closure of the bowling centre in Darwin, The Dustbowl is now the only Bowling Centre in the Northern Territory. Each year The Darwin Championships, The Alice Springs Championships and the Northern Territory Championships are held at The Dustbowl. And of course, every second year the Alice Springs Masters Games are held. The Dustbowl has been involved in every Alice Springs Masters Games since the beginning.
