We are delighted to announce that current Open Music Academy (OMA) student Hannah Vincent was recently awarded the Leanne Nicholls Music Scholarship to help support her studies at OMA. Congratulations, Hannah! ๐Ÿ‘

'Over the past eleven years, music has become a significant part of my life. I began learning flute in Year 2 and have since expanded my musical journey by taking up clarinet in Year 8, followed by saxophone and piccolo in Year 10. Learning multiple instruments has allowed me to grow not only technically but also as a more versatile and collaborative musician, with experiences across many different ensembles and a range of musical styles. Receiving this scholarship means a great deal to me, as it recognises my dedication and encourages me to continue growing as a musician. OMA has played an important role in my development, particularly through Katherine Moorhead's supportive and inspiring tuition, which has helped shape my confidence and growth as a musician. Looking ahead, I hope to continue my musical journey and hopefully study at the Elder Conservatorium of Music and School of Performing Arts next year.'

On Friday 15 May, Elder Conservatorium staff, alumni and current students were involved in State Opera South Australia's magnificent new production of Vincenzo Bellini's Norma at Her Majesty's Theatre.

Head of Classical Voice Teddy Tahu Rhodes played the role of Oroveso, and Elder Conservatorium alumni Lucy Stoddart and Callum McGing also gave fabulous performances as Clotilde and Flavio respectively. Six classical voice students (along with ECMSPA lecturer Catherine Campbell) also sang with the Chorus as part of our partnership with State Opera South Australia. Bravo to all involved!

A number of Elder Conservatorium staff and alumni were involved in the 2026 Coriole Music Festival at Coriole Vineyards, McLaren Vale (Saturday 16โ€“Sunday 17 May), curated by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra's Concertmaster Kate Suthers. Staff members Elizabeth Layton (violin) and Michael Ierace (piano) were featured prominently throughout the program, and were joined by Elder Conservatorium alumni Alison Heike (violin), Belinda Gehlert (violin), Gemma Phillips (cello) and Desiree Frahn (soprano).

'Violinist Elizabeth Layton was commandingly strong [in the Korngold String Sextet in D major, Op. 10] with its wrestling energy, but she was also gracious with its warmth. [...] With Michael Ierace at the helm [in the Mahler Piano Quartet], the performance was one of true stature. This is a pianist who continually impresses, and here he was at his most insightful. Thoughtful and without a trace of indulgence, Ierace ushered it in with magnificent breath.'

โ€“ Graham Strahle, InReview

The festival culminated with the world premiere performance of the string quartet arrangement of 'This Too Shall Pass' (featuring Desiree Frahn, soprano; Belinda Gehlert, violin; Alison Heike, violin; Richard Waters, viola; and Gemma Phillips, cello) by our Adjunct Lecturer in Composition, Dr. Anne Cawrse; and 'Stellar' by Elder Conservatorium alumna Belinda Gehlert (featuring Kate Suthers, violin, Belinda Gehlert, violin, Neil Thompson, viola; and Gemma Phillips, cello). Congratulations to all involved! ๐Ÿ‘

Dr Oliver Fartach-Naini (Graduate Research Coordinator and Senior Lecturer, Guitar and Pedagogy) has recently returned from a two-week visit to the renowned Ingesund School of Music at Karlstad University in Sweden. During his stay, he delivered a series of masterclasses and individual lessons, and also presented a lecture-recital. A highlight of the visit was the world premiere of a new work by Australian composer Professor Ken Murray (University of Melbourne), performed as part of Ingesund's lunchtime concert series. The visit also strengthened professional ties, with discussions laying the groundwork for future collaborative projects between the two institutions.
