Our Story
ButohOUT! Festival2020 - Primal Color www.butohout.com
ButohOUT! is an annual festival activating local diverse communities in Victoria through the profound Japanese performance art medium of Butoh. Following 3 critically acclaimed years, ButohOUT! 2020 offers 5 workshops and 2 performance seasons exploring the artistic theme, ‘Primal Colour’. This year the program is presented in partnership with Abbotsford Convent Foundation and Dancehouse.
The 5 specialised workshops include 3 explorations with acclaimed Japanese Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret, Yumi Umiumare; a weekend intensive with internationally renowned Japanese German Butoh practitioner, and the popular family workshop, Peek-A-Butoh, co-presented with Convent Kids program. All workshops will be held at the stunning location of Abbotsford Convent.
ButohOUT! 2020 will explore diverse interpretations of Butoh which originally emerged as Dance of Darkness in Japan during the late 1950’s. ButohOUT! creates platforms for participants to explore their authentic movement vocabulary. Butoh, classically presented in the colour of white (ie. white make-up), is believed to 'erase' and ‘de-identify’ the performers excessive and artificial layers. Through stripping back layers of conditioning, the participants will explore the essence and source of emotion through colour utilising metaphorical expressions.
