Butohout

Butohout ButohOUT! Originally called Dance of Darkness, Butoh has always been associated with the marginalised, embracing the abnormal, odd, quirky and the deviant.

The 5th iteration of ButohOUT!, a collection of events inspired by the dance theatre artform of Butoh, explores the artistic theme 'New Ab/Normal' during the post-pandemic era with the question: what is normal? Led by artistic director Yumi Umiumare and the producer Takashi Takiguchi, it offers 5 public workshops including one for children and seniors, a performance-making laboratory, a forum and

2 performance presentations, one at Dancehouse and the other at Abbotsford Convent. One of the first Butoh performances so shocked its Japanese audiences that it was forced to go underground, yet now Butoh is accepted as an innovative and transformative art form. Conversely, what we used to think as ‘normal’ is no longer so. Instead, the term, 'new normal' exists, which contains the paradoxical nuance that an abnormality can become ‘normal’. We hang onto a semblance of normalcy like a security blanket - but why? With a new creative team of collaborators, Emma Bathgate (Voice), Jacqui Stockdale (Visual Arts), Ai Yamamoto & Dan West (Sound), ButohOUT! 2021 will develop and present two new works, through a series of public workshops and creative
laboratories, to amplify diverse voices in contemporary dance/theatre work. embraces the power of the unknown while creating platforms for participants to explore their authentic expression. With something for everyone, ButohOUT! extends a warm welcome to all from experienced creatives to newcomers, children and families.

Our Story

ButohOUT! Festival2020 - Primal Color www.butohout.com

ButohOUT! is an annual festival activating local diverse communities in Victoria through the profound Japanese performance art medium of Butoh. Following 3 critically acclaimed years, ButohOUT! 2020 offers 5 workshops and 2 performance seasons exploring the artistic theme, ‘Primal Colour’. This year the program is presented in partnership with Abbotsford Convent Foundation and Dancehouse.

The 5 specialised workshops include 3 explorations with acclaimed Japanese Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret, Yumi Umiumare; a weekend intensive with internationally renowned Japanese German Butoh practitioner, and the popular family workshop, Peek-A-Butoh, co-presented with Convent Kids program. All workshops will be held at the stunning location of Abbotsford Convent.

ButohOUT! 2020 will explore diverse interpretations of Butoh which originally emerged as Dance of Darkness in Japan during the late 1950’s. ButohOUT! creates platforms for participants to explore their authentic movement vocabulary. Butoh, classically presented in the colour of white (ie. white make-up), is believed to 'erase' and ‘de-identify’ the performers excessive and artificial layers. Through stripping back layers of conditioning, the participants will explore the essence and source of emotion through colour utilising metaphorical expressions.
