ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival

ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival 2026
9 JULY – 9 AUGUST 2026 A new dance culture unfolds itself and spreads out.

Thousands of professional dancers, choreographers and teachers from all over the world, come together, work together, for five weeks, in one city - ImPulsTanz. In Austria‘s leading cultural city Vienna the cultural manager Karl Regenburger and the choreographer Ismael Ivo launch the "Internationale Tanzwochen Wien" in 1984, in order to give contemporary dance a voice in Austria. With six teachers

- amongst them the well-known Joe Alegado, Germaine Acogny and Walter Raines - and twenty workshops, the two organisers get the festival started. Four years later, in 1988, a performance programme is added to the increasingly successful workshop festival: the "ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival" is introduced for the first time, featuring works by Marie Chouinard, Ko Murobushi and Mark Tompkins. All names that are still closely connected with ImPulsTanz, which meanwhile has grown to Europe's biggest contemporary festival. Aiming the furtherance of contemporary dance in Austria, ImPulsTanz fathers the Research programme in 1990, offering work and research projects for professional dancers, with Susanne Linke, Mary Overlie, Karine Saporta and Nina Martin as project mentors in the first year. Another step to the hotspot of the contemporary dance scene is made by establishing [8:tension] Young Choreographers' Series within the festival programme. The series invites emerging artists to show their works at ImPulsTanz, where they also get the opportunity to connect with the international community of dance and performance artists

Today, ImPulsTanz stands for performances, workshops, research projects as well as for the soçial programme, which became with the festival lounge and parties a fixed hightlight in Vienna’s summer nightlife. With an annual programme of about 50 productions, staged in the city’s most important venues, and more than 200 Workshops, where dance is celebrated in all its forms, ImPulsTanz has delevoped into one of the most important festivals for contemporary dance and performance worldwide. In 2012, the festival has been awarded with the "Bank Austria Kunstpreis", Austria's most prestigious art prize. The ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival takes place every year from mid-July to mid-August in Vienna. You want to combine artistic dance practice with theory?

Our research projects offer the opportunity to explore the practice of a particular field, as well as the working methods and artistic forms of the respective teaching artists. Across 10 research projects, participants can open up sensory spaces of voice, imagination and touch, intertwine physical practice with „cunty Marxism“ and unorthodox prayers, or explore exclusion and difference in dance. Let horses become gateways to the mythical world, or dive into Myth, Madness, Montage and Melodrama. The most important thing to bring: curiosity!

Depending on the teaching artist, research projects may be process-oriented and focus on shared methods and ideas, or lead to a concrete outcome such as a collaborative final showing.

One week to go: Let the countdown begin! 💓

From 15 April, 10:00 (CET), all 239 workshops and research projects will be available to book online and at the Workshop Office in the MuseumsQuartier. ✨

In 19 studios, 11 of them at our workshop centre Arsenal, we will once again be celebrating dance and movement this year – working up a sweat on the dance floors or watching and swaying to the beat. Opportunities for the latter include the free Open Doors events such as «impressions’26» on 12 July and the Freestyle Dance Contest on 25 July. «the biggest expressions ever’26» will also invite audiences to a two-part evening on 7 August, including the final showing and a party in the arcaded courtyard of Vienna City Hall. Tickets for the party go on sale on 9 June 2026. 💃🪩
