Beidou Orienteering 2026 in Yunnan – Invitation to China

From 31 January to 8 February 2026, Beidou Orienteering will take place in southern China’s Yunnan province at an altitude of around 1,800 m.

Erik Simkovics (University of Vienna, Event Director Vienna Orienteering Challenge) has been part of the organising team since 2019 and coordinates international participation for athletes from Europe, Oceania, and other regions:

“Beidou Orienteering is a unique experience. Most participants come from universities in South China, but the event is open to all ages and performance levels.
The programme includes seven competitions, fun events, and orienteering training sessions. Improving skills and international exchange are at the heart of the event.
From arrival to departure, everything is organised – transport, accommodation, meals, competitions, and training. Taking part is easy: register, book your flight, and come.

For 2026, participants from Australia, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom have already registered. Together with our team, we make sure it becomes a fantastic experience.”

Who can join?
All orienteering enthusiasts are warmly welcome — from first-time participants to elite athletes, from juniors to masters. If you have a spirit of adventure and are curious to experience orienteering with a Chinese twist, Beidou is for you. Beidou Orienteering offers an all-inclusive package for international orienteers, coordinated by Erik Simkovics, the event director of the Vienna Orienteering Challenge:

This is the third time that I am coordinating Beidou Orienteering for international participants. Beidou is a multi-day orienteering event with a unique charm. At its core, Beidou is about orienteering, friendship and shared experiences. We share the same accommodation, travel to the events and have lunch and dinner together. This time the focus will be on forest orienteering at high altitude (1800 - 2000m).
Welcome to colourful Yunnan - expect spring weather and a fun week of orienteering.

The event package includes accommodation, meals, local transport, competition, training, an English-speaking group leader and host. Simply register & book your flight to Kunming — we will take care of everything else!

Vienna Orienteering Challenge 2025 | A weekend full of highlights ❤️🤍

More than 350 athletes from 25 nations took part in the international sprint orienteering event.

The venues Wienerberg, Spittelberg & Museumsquartier, and Campus WU offered varied and challenging sprint orienteering competitions. The sprint relay was the final highlight of the weekend!

Jasmina Gassner and Nicolas Kastner were the elite winners of the Vienna Orienteering Challenge 2025. Kastner secured the first Austrian men’s overall victory in VOC history.

The Austrian orienteering national team also used the event to gain valuable international experience in sprint orienteering. Selection races for the youth and junior teams as well as test races for the elite team were held as part of the VOC.

The technically demanding courses, the variety of venues, and the good accessibility by public transport were praised by the participants. A particular highlight was the competition at Spittelberg & MuseumsQuartier, whose finish line was located directly in front of the beautiful Academy of Fine Arts on Schillerplatz.

Vienna Orienteering Challenge was powered by Fossibot Deutschland: One of the innovations at this year’s VOC was a 100% emission-free power supply. The entire IT and sound system was powered by a Fossibot Power Station.

Benefits for orienteering event organisers are that it doesn’t make any noise and less cable is needed when setting up the arena. Event locations can be off-grid and this opens up for more possibilities when choosing event locations. Finally it is also better for the environment.

At the 6th edition of viennaochallenge, we designed unique orienteering flags! ❤️ The designs are limited to red for all participants, pink for our team, and gold, silver, and bronze for the top overall places.

These flags are well known in Asian orienteering traditions, where orienteers often exchange them. Now, they are brought to Europe and they are truly one of their kind.
