🎓 Training Session at CHNT31

Make it Matter: Design Thinking Approaches for Meaningful Digital Heritage Storytelling

How do we turn archaeological and cultural heritage research into digital stories that are engaging, accessible and meaningful — without losing scholarly rigour?
This hands-on training session introduces a human-centred design thinking approach to digital heritage storytelling.

You will work with practical methods such as:
👥 Personas
🗺️ Journey mapping
🎬 Storyboarding
💡 Prototyping
🔎 Testing

The focus is not on a specific tool or platform, but on the choices behind a digital heritage story: Who is it for? What should it communicate? How can multimedia support the message? And what does it mean for audiences today?

Bring your own research topic and materials and use the session to experiment with approaches you can take directly into your own digital heritage projects.

The training is aimed at researchers, heritage professionals, educators and students working in archaeology, history, architecture and related fields.

🔎 When Openness Meets Accuracy

How can archaeology become more open and participatory without compromising the quality of the data it depends on?
That is the central question of Session 9 at CHNT31: Community Engagement in Archaeology: Balancing Participation and Data Quality.

The session brings together researchers, practitioners and experts from archaeology, museums and cultural heritage to discuss the opportunities — and the very real challenges — of working with citizen scientists and wider communities.

Two projects provide particularly interesting perspectives:
🌊 Aqua Cultural Heritage explores how communities can contribute to the documentation and protection of underwater cultural heritage using digital tools and structured data workflows.

🏺 United by Crisis involves citizen scientists and school students in field surveys, find documentation and soil sampling around the Early Neolithic settlement landscape of Asparn/Schletz in Lower Austria.

Both projects show the enormous potential of participatory archaeology — but also raise important questions about training, validation, data quality, documentation and long-term sustainability.

And that is exactly what makes this session interesting: this is not about presenting perfect best-practice examples. It is about openly discussing what works, what does not, where participatory approaches reach their limits, and what we can learn from those experiences.

→ How can participation remain accessible while meeting high standards of data quality?
→ Which digital tools can support validation and long-term usability?
→ Where do participatory workflows reach their practical limits?

📚 From CHNT to an international publication

One of the things we are particularly proud of at CHNT is what happens after the conference.

Last year, as part of CHNT30 in Vienna, we hosted the UHDL 2025 workshop — bringing together researchers working on urban history, digital libraries and new approaches to historical research.

The discussions and contributions have now resulted in a peer-reviewed Springer volume: the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Research and Education in Urban History in the Age of Digital Libraries.

The book contains 13 peer-reviewed papers, selected from 38 submissions, covering topics from theory and methods to data handling, machine learning, digital technologies, applications, education and BIM.

For us, this is more than just another publication. It reflects our ongoing effort to build international connections, support high-quality research and continuously develop the CHNT publication system.

We are constantly working on making the results of our conferences more visible, accessible and valuable to the wider international research community.

And this is just one example of what can grow out of the CHNT community.

UHDL 2025 proceedings focus on ​digital repositories, suitability and efficiency of the technical solutions for museum contexts and library studies.

🇲🇳 MONGOLIAN TRADITIONAL DANCE AT CHNT31! 🇲🇳

We are excited to announce a very special artistic highlight of CHNT31 in Vienna!

On 11 November 2026, dancer, choreographer and researcher E. Amarjargal will join our evening programme with a powerful solo performance inspired by Mongolian rock art, traditional horse tamga and nomadic cultural heritage.

The performance brings together two interconnected works:
✨ Numan Tuulis
✨ Tamgan Biyelgee

Through movement, the performance explores cultural memory, Mongolian identity and the heritage of the nomadic world — bringing a unique artistic perspective to our international CHNT audience.

🏆 The work has already been presented internationally and received the Grand Prix in the National Traditional Dance category at an international World Dance Championship.

A powerful connection between archaeological heritage, living tradition and contemporary performance.

🌿 Dynamics in Heritage and Landscape: Learning from Past Logics in Times of Change

The session explores how historical knowledge, past adaptation strategies and research traditions can inform heritage practice in a time of rapid environmental, social and technological change.
What happens when historical approaches meet digital methods, data integration and geospatial technologies? And how can innovation build on existing knowledge rather than replace it?

We’re very much looking forward to welcoming you to the beautiful Apothecary Wing (Apothekertrakt) of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna! 🏛️✨

To help you get here easily and find your way around once you arrive, we’ve put together the most important information on how to get there, where to park, and where to find everything at the venue.

🚇 Getting there by public transport

From Vienna city centre, the easiest way to reach us is by taking the U4 underground line towards Hütteldorf and getting off at Schönbrunn. Take the Grünbergstraße exit – the Apothecary Wing is just a few minutes’ walk from there (take the entrance at Schönbrunner Schlossstraße).

You can also reach Schönbrunn by:

🚋 Tram: Lines 10 or 60 – stop Schönbrunn
🚌 Bus: Line 10A – stop Schönbrunn

🚗 Arriving by car

If you are travelling by car, you can use the APCOA Schönbrunn car park, located close to Schönbrunn Palace and within walking distance of the Apothecary Wing.

We’ve also prepared a venue map to help you navigate the Apothecary Wing.

📍 Rooms 1, 1a and 8 are where you’ll find our sessions, round tables and training sessions.
