HIGHLANDER Murau, Austria is a 103 km long hiking experience that lasts for 5 days and leads you through the outstanding landscape of the alpine region “Niedere Tauern”
You will cross green forests, walk through idyllic alpine pastures and enjoy unforgettable views from the most beautiful mountain peaks in Styria.
The start of the Highlander Murau will take place at the Tonnerhütte/Mühlen. From there you will reach the peak of Zirbitzkogel (2396m high) with its 360 degree panorama from the Karawanken to the Dachstein. The Zirbitzkogel lives up to its title of “most beautiful view mountain of Styria”! Following the mountain ridge to the first checkpoint at Oberberger Alm, you can spot the further parts of the Highlander route. After hiking through green forests and passing Kreuzeck, another checkpoint is awaiting you. The medieval castle called “Steinschloss” which was built in the 12th century is one of the highlights of your adventure!
Through your journey you will pass the Pleschaitz (also known as the “bald mountain”) where you will have an amazing view through the whole Murtal. After hiking down Pleschaitz on the north side, you will reach the lovely old town of Oberwölz before you will conquer the challenging mountain range of the Lachtal area. Steineck, Schiesseck and Lachtaler Zinken are peaks that will make a hiker´s heart beating faster. The finish of Highlander Murau will be at the famous castle Rothenfels. By reaching the finish at the castle Rothenfels you can call yourself a HIGHLANDER!
