Report on parkrun #131:

The long weekend (after Ascension Day) brought a number of visitors to Graz including people from

- Karlsruhe
- Coventry
- Worcester
- Donaupark Vienna
- and Galway

Plus several people taking part in their first ever parkrun (yay!) and a few milestones: 25th parkrun for Johannes and Hanna and Paula’s 50th – congratulations!!

A big thanks to this week's volunteers: Sarah, Elisabeth, Shane, Stephanie, Menno, Richard, Gergely and Olly.

The weather stayed dry and conditions were all-round great. We look forward to more such parkruns before the heat of summer hits.

Apologies for the delay, but here is the report! Thank you to everyone for popping along to our 130th parkrun. We had a lovely group of 70 people embracing parkrun in Graz this past Saturday. Despite a few minor obstacles along the course, the atmosphere was brilliant and we saw 10 new PBs achieved — congratulations to all of you!

We also welcomed 13 first timers to Graz, and it was great to have visitors joining us from Vienna, Germany, New Zealand, the UK, and Ireland. parkrun really is at its best when people from different places come together for the same simple reason: a good run, walk, jog, volunteer, and chat on a Saturday morning.

A special mention as well to the sign language being used at the powow afterwards — it was great to see and a nice reminder that parkrun is for everyone. Shoutout to all deaf (park)runners and supporters in our community!

As always, a huge thank you goes to our volunteers, without whom the event simply could not happen each week. If you haven’t volunteered before and would like to give it a try sometime, we’d love to have you involved!

We hope everyone enjoyed the morning, the sunshine, and the post-parkrun chats, and we look forward to seeing you all again next Saturday for event number 131!

After the success of the London Marathon last week, there was only one event to be at today - the Stadtpark Graz parkrun, particularly as it was the 'May The Course Be With You' holiday weekend. The park was looking beautiful, the sun was shining, the bi-lingual volunteers pumped with energy and the pom-poms were shaken with endless excitement!

Our Run Director was Peter Varun Dsouza, ably assisted by Menno Fraters (who was officially timekeeper but seemed to be doing lots of other roles too - well done!), Sarah Knights (who I had been in communication with for months about whether there would be two parkruns this holiday weekend), Jonas Potthoff, Simon Black, Fumiaki Fujitaa, Kristen More, Elisabeth Lachner, Tania Pacheco, Olly Cooley, Gareth Mitchell and Nemone Van de Bliake.

Peter's motivational and 'stern' reminder to 'to enjoy yourself' was a lovely way to relax everyone and bring a smile to worried first timers and the perennially worried participants like myself. The course is duck-shaped and makes a great screenshot if you use Strava (or similar) and post your parkruns on social media. The park is a really beautiful heritage site, with a 3-lap course on wide paths and a couple of gentle inclines; what is there not to enjoy!

Parkrun tourists had travelled from far and wide including Wexford (Republic of Ireland), Munich, Wi******er, Chelmsford and Newcastle. Whilst there weren't any notable milestones, or none that were being owned up to, two first timers had made Graz their inaugural event including our very good friend Thomas Kramer (Graz local). Thomas, greatly assisted by his dog Ella, got off to a flying start, which may have worried some of the locals aiming for a PB, but was soon reigned in on laps 2 and 3. The first person to complete the course was Fumiaki Fujita with a cracking time of 17:06. In total 53 finished the course.

A big well done to everyone, volunteers, locals and visitors alike for turning up, particularly on this warm and sunny weekend, when sun-loungers may have beckoned.

Kind regards,
Brian Cox, Chelmsford

Never mind the parkrunners, last Saturday the PARK stole the show.

Stadtpark is looking gorgeous this Spring. We couldn't keep our eyes off the lilac bushes and tulips as well as the other lovely trees in bloom.

On a side note:
- we had a total of 61 parkrun finishers
- including visitors from Newcastle, Australia, and Manchester, England
- supported by 9 volunteers
- 15 motivated participants finished in their best time ever
- 5 people were here for the first time ever - if you are locals we hope to see you again!

Take care and see you soon!

This post is long 😔 but Just take a minute to consider how to save a life:

The wider association of parkrun has organized and paid for every parkrun location to have a defibrillator / AED. It is on site every Saturday.

What’s terrific about AEDs is that they allow anybody to become an angel of life for a fellow human being, with only a little bit of mental preparation.

To that end: AEDs are designed to be really simple and easy to use.
In fact, you don’t use an AED, so much as let IT use YOU.

Let’s see how this works in a parkrun setting.

1) You are running, walking, marshaling or whatever… pay attention to the people around you. Is someone wobbling, buckled over or acting confused? Is somebody going to a bench to sit down, pressing or rubbing their chest, arm, stomach as if injured? Stop and ask if they are OK. These may be the first signs of a heart attack.

2) Assess and call for help. If someone faints or seems unresponsive in your presence, check to see if you can get them to come round (this means: gentle shaking, patting, talking to them).

If they remain unresponsive, go to a marshal, the tailwalker or a passerby with a phone and call 144 for an ambulance.

Send someone else to parkrun HQ (the finish line) to fetch the AED (or use the walkie-talkie carried by the marshals and tailwalker to call the Run Director for the AED, or do both).

NOTE: When you call 144 you will have to give your location. So the ambulance can get there as quickly as possible, consider whether you are near:

Café Promenade = almost at the end of the parkrun lap, on the road into the city (where our route turns down to go along the duck ponds)

Parkhouse Café = the café / bar inside Stadtpark, right next to the big pond

Near parkrun HQ / the children’s playground

Towards the first marshal position = the Police offices at Paulustor, fairly close to Geidorfplatz

Between the marshal positions = Near Geidorfplatz, along Glacisstraße bike path

Middle marshal position at the Rose Garden = close to
Zinzendorfgasse entrance, the big fountain

Use these KEYWORDS above to communicate your position to the emergency service!!

3) Deploy the AED. Once you’ve called 144 and got the AED, open the AED rucksack and turn it on – it has a big obvious ON button for idiots and people in a panic.

4) Do as you’re told. From here, the AED will give you audible directions (pls note: in German!). It will tell you how to put the pads on the person, one on each side of their chest. Make sure they are pushed down firmly onto their skin.

5) Hands off the person. The AED will tell you to not touch the person - this is so it can analyze their heart to see if they are in a “shockable rhythm.” The AED will then say “shock advised, stand clear” (pls note: in German) in which case the AED has detected a shockable rhythm.

It’s critical that no one touches the patient at this time, both to not interfere with the AED reading the rhythm, and so no one else gets shocked. DO NOT TOUCH the person until directed.

The other thing the AED may say is “No shock advised” (in German). This means the person is not in a rhythm which will respond well to a shock. If that happens, the AED will direct you to perform basic life support (CPR) like rescue breathing and chest compressions (and also give you instructions on how to do this, pls note: in German) until emergency services arrive and take over.

That's it !

ALSO:
It improves the world if you take a first-aid course. Basic life support courses are low in cost and available all over the place. They will teach you how to do CPR so you can save somebody’s life, even without a defibrillator on hand.
