Weah Slams CAF's AFCON Decision: "Football Must Be Decided on the Pitch"

By Bloom Tizora

George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d'Or winner and three-time African Footballer of the Year, has strongly criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for stripping Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title and awarding it to Morocco. Weah argues that the decision undermines the authority of match officials and sets a dangerous precedent for African football.

In a statement, Weah emphasized that according to Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, the referee's decisions on the pitch are final. He pointed out that the referee allowed the match to continue after Senegal's walk-off and completed the game, including extra time, with a result obtained on the field.

Weah described CAF's decision as "unjustified" and a "travesty" that has "scarred and blemished African football," eroding trust in the fairness and consistency of the sport. He called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to intervene and ensure the decision is reviewed.

Weah also denied social media claims that he supports CAF's decision, labeling them "blatantly false"

The Unfolding Saga of Wayne Rooney: A Life Lived at Full Til (2003/04 - Present)

By Bloom Tizora

The year is 2003. A prodigious talent named Wayne Rooney is tearing up the Premier League with his boyhood club, Everton, a raw force of nature barely out of his teens. Little did the football world know, this was just the prologue to one of the most remarkable and rollercoaster careers in English football history. As Rooney's life and career unfolded over the subsequent two decades, it mirrored the dramatic shifts and turns of the beautiful game itself, leaving a trail of shattered records, gleaming silverware, personal milestones, and a few poignant reminders of football's relentless cycle.
The Rise of a Legend: Manchester United and Unprecedented Success
The inevitable happened in 2004. Rooney, a hot commodity, made the move that would define much of his playing career: a blockbuster transfer to Manchester United. This was the crucible where a boy wonder would forge himself into a footballing titan.
His time at Old Trafford was nothing short of spectacular. He became the spearhead of a dominant United side, collecting an astonishing 16 trophies. This haul included five Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, and multiple League Cups. While conquering Europe and England, Rooney was also building a family. He got married and, over the years, welcomed three kids, establishing roots off the pitch even as he soared on it.
Individually, Rooney etched his name into the annals of football history. He became Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer, a truly monumental achievement that saw him surpass the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton. Not content with club records, he mirrored this feat on the international stage, becoming England's all-time top goalscorer, another record previously held by Charlton.
Amidst the triumphs, there were also personal battles, albeit minor ones in the grand scheme. The intense pressure and public scrutiny saw him lose his hair, a common affliction for many, but one he publicly addressed by getting a transplant. A testament to his resilience and willingness to tackle challenges head-on, both on and off the pitch.
The Homecoming and New Horizons
After a glorious chapter at United, the narrative brought him full circle. In 2017, Rooney made an emotional return, going back to Everton, the club where it all began. It was a romantic gesture, a final hurrah in the blue shirt, where he continued to demonstrate flashes of his undeniable class before embarking on a new adventure across the Atlantic.
The move to the USA saw him join D.C. United in MLS. Here, he reinvigorated his career, scoring spectacular goals and showcasing his leadership qualities, reminding everyone of the passion that still burned within. However, even in new surroundings, some old patterns resurfaced as he would lose his hair again.
The Managerial Merry-Go-Round and Beyond
The lure of England proved strong once

Relegation Showdown: Dynamos Control Their Own Survival

By Bloom Tizora

Today is the definitive day for Dynamos. Their survival hopes hinge entirely on their performance, with a victory not just boosting their chances but potentially securing their safety before the final weekend.
Dynamos’ Survival Scenarios
The club's fate rests entirely on the outcome of their match today:
A Win: Puts Dynamos on 40 points. Depending on other results, this could be enough to guarantee their survival as early as today. Safety would be virtually assured.
A Draw: Keeps them in contention but forces a tense, winner-takes-all final-day clash against FC Platinum.
A Loss: Throws the club into deep jeopardy. They would be forced to beat FC Platinum on the final day and simultaneously pray that rivals above them slip up.
Crucially, Dynamos hold a superior goal difference over key relegation rivals like Bikita Minerals. This tiebreaker advantage means that even if the teams finish on equal points, the math will likely favor DeMbare.
The Pivotal Fixtures
Dynamos need to win, but they also require specific results from rivals to maximize their gains and secure early safety.
1. The High-Stakes Stalemate
The clash between Highlanders and Manica Diamonds (both locked on 37 points) is pivotal. Dynamos need a draw here. A stalemate would move both sides to 38 points, meaning at least one rival will struggle to reach the 40-point safety mark in the final round, significantly boosting Dynamos' odds.
2. Rivals Must Stumble
The results of the following matches are also key to relieving pressure:
Bikita Minerals vs. Simba Bhora: This is a must-win for Bikita to remain a threat. A Bikita loss or draw is the ideal result for Dynamos, potentially neutralizing them before the final day.
Ngezi Platinum vs. Chicken Inn: Dynamos benefit if Ngezi Platinum avoids defeat. An Ngezi win or draw prevents Chicken Inn from climbing further, indirectly easing pressure on the lower end of the table.
Scotland vs. Greenfuel: Champions Scotland must not lose to relegation-threatened Greenfuel. A Scotland win or draw ensures Greenfuel remains stuck in the danger zone.
The Bottom Line
Dynamos control their fate. The message to the players is clear: win today, and with a mix of favourable draws and losses among rivals, safety could be sealed early. Fans will be tracking every result, but a victory makes the rest of the league’s outcomes a minor concern.

WARRIORS USHER IN NEW ERA WITH APPOINTMENT OF MARIAN 'MARIO' MARINICA AS HEAD COACH

By Bloom Tizora

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has officially announced the appointment of highly experienced UEFA Pro Licensed coach Marian "Mario" Marinica as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men's National Football Team, the Warriors. Marinica, a Romanian national, has signed a one-year contract and brings a wealth of international experience across four in continents.

ZIFA President Ngobile Magwizi expressed confidence in Marinica's ability to guide the Warriors to a new era, emphasizing his blend of technical expertise and strategic leadership. "We believe that Marinica's wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results make him the ideal candidate to lead our national team," Magwizi said.

A CAREER SPANNING CONTINENTS AND ELITE CLUBS

Marinica's résumé is extensive, boasting over 25 years of international coaching and technical experience in Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. His credentials include a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Coaching and a Diploma in Management. He has worked with several prestigious international clubs, including Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Internazionale Milano, AS Monaco, Liverpool FC, and Tottenham Hotspur. Marinica has also had stints with national teams, including Paraguay, Mauritius, Malawi, and Liberia.

MALAWI SUCCESS AND AFRICAN EXPERIENCE

A key element of Marinica's profile is his recent successful spell with Malawi, where he served as Technical Director and Head Coach from 2021 to 2023. Under his guidance, Malawi secured their best-ever finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, reaching the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Morocco. More recently, he led Liberia to a significant rise in the FIFA Rankings, becoming the highest climber in June 2024.

VISION FOR THE WARRIORS

ZIFA President Magwizi highlighted Marinica's "wealth of experience, modern football philosophy, and proven results" as key factors in his appointment. Marinica's background encompasses deep expertise in player development, match analysis, and grassroots consultancy. His track record of empowering local coaches and integrating diaspora talent aligns closely with ZIFA's long-term football development strategy.

Marinica is expected to assume his duties immediately, with his first task being to oversee preparations for upcoming friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar, as well as the crucial AFCON 2025 campaign. The Zimbabwean football fraternity will be watching closely to see if his experience and modern philosophy can deliver the sustainable football structure ZIFA is hoping for.
