A houseboat identified as the Zambuka sank on Lake Kariba yesterday after encountering severe weather conditions.
According to details shared by Bruce Woods, the vessel left the harbour despite rough waters and was headed toward Sampas. The captain later decided to turn back due to worsening conditions, but powerful waves repeatedly crashed over the stern, flooding the engine compartments. One engine failed, forcing the captain to attempt an emergency beaching at Mica Point.
Before reaching the shore, the rear of the boat became fully submerged. All clients managed to jump safely onto land, with only one person sustaining a minor injury. No lives were lost.
Woods praised the captain for his “heroic” actions in ensuring all passengers survived. However, he questioned why the boat was not equipped with a functioning bilge pump, noting that improved safety equipment could have prevented the sinking and urging the operating company to upgrade its safety standards.
