Fête de la Musique Pretoria

Fête de la Musique Pretoria World Music Day: Amateur and professional musicians invade the streets of cities over the world to celebrate the joy of music in all its forms.

A Free event for everybody to enjoy! The Fête de la Musique (World Music Day or the Festival of Music) is a popular and FREE music festival taking place each year on 21 June, the shortest night/day of the year. Throughout the world, jazz, soul, funk, rock, electro, reggae, classical music and many other musical styles are celebrated with vigorous enthusiasm. Fête de la Musique's purpose is to prom

ote music in two ways:
- Amateur and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets, under the slogan "Faites de la musique" ("make music", a homophone of Fête de la Musique).
- Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public. Two of the caveats to being sanctioned by the official Fête de la Musique organization in Paris are that all concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free. This is true of most participating cities, now, as well. The festival does not have any artistic management; rather it is based on the public’s participation. Some people make performance venues available, others make their music, and everyone comes to listen, dance, and celebrate. The Fête de la Musique first began in 1982 in France to give exposure to the large number of musicians in the country. Since its creation, the music festival has become an international phenomenon and is celebrated in no less than 340 cities in the world in 110 countries.

Playing this Friday, 18 June, as part of the Fête de la Musique Southern Africa, Abahambayo from the Alliance Francaise De Durban.

Abahambayo are Frankie Buthelezi on vocals, Nhlanhla Zondi on guitar and vocals, Barry Clausen on bass and Oudskül on percussion. They have been performing around KwaZulu-Natal for three years, from the mountains to the sea. Their music is the embodiment of the land, its people, their dreams and the pulse of life.

Abahambayo are a musical group that aims at preserving African folk music by fusing modern jazz and pop technique to appeal to almost everyone who comes across the music and those wanting to learn about the past and current history of the Zulu folk.

Abahambayo are a highly polished professional outfit who can go from set-up to soundcheck and be performing within fifteen minutes of arrival at the venue. They have a catalogue of original material broad and varied enough to entertain any mood and the energy to change the mood when the mood needs to get its dancing shoes on and boogie on down to b***y shakin’ African rhythms.
