Come chat to the KZN Snare Aware Team about their work of removing snares and saving wildlife at the Ashburton Aloe Festival between 9h00 & 16h00 on Sunday 5th July at Impala Bend (Venue D), D389 Ashburton East.

Snare Aware is run by a small group of volunteers who have made a massive impact on wildlife protection, with over 1300 snares removed in the last two years in KZN and countless people and organisations trained up to do the same. They have travel the length and breadth of KZN at their own cost. Funds raised go towards batteries and data for our camera traps that monitor poaching hotspots. The Ashburton Aloe Festival is a meander of four venues open to the public between 9h00 - 16h00 over the weekend of the 4th & 5th July with a full program of nature-based walks, talks and activities including a snake show and anti-poaching K9 display on both days. Enjoy a variety of light food and refreshments available, local stalls and art to browse, plant sales and aloe sales with special show discounts from Rocky Wonder Aloe Nursery. Our full program and attractions will be pinned to the top of this page soon.

Tickets are R50 adults, Children R20 and Children under 6 are free. One ticket allows entry into all four venues per day. This year you can book online at Quicket: https://www.quicket.co.za/.../375063-ashburton-aloe.../ or bring cash for tickets available at all venues.

The event is organised by the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy with funds raised going to support anti-poaching activities. The venues form part of the Mpushini Protected Environment, a Biodiversity Stewardship Nature Reserve. Strictly no dogs allowed.

Join Steve Smit of Money Helpline for a talk "Vervet Monkeys: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Educate" at the Ashburton Aloe Festival at 10h30 on Saturday 4th July at Mawingo Farm (Venue C), D389 Ashburton East.

Working with wildlife conflict is not an easy task, especially with vervets in urban surroundings. Steve says "Looking back over the years there are always going to be rescues that spring to mind when we sit chatting about experiences in days gone by. So, my 'call back the past' share at Aloe Fest is certainly going include the most memorable happy endings. Do join Steve and enjoy these stories in the interests of helping to conserve these much maligned creatures!

Keith has played an active role protecting the wildlife in the Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy over many years, responding to poaching incidents and improving safety and security. He is well known as the host of the popular Aloe Festival venue, Impala Bend. There is an exciting line-up of activities here to celebrate our Aloe Fest's 20th Birthday. Join Dr. Robert Graham at the Ashburton Aloe Festival for a "Winter Birdwalk" at 08h00 on Sunday 5th July at Galago Farm (Venue B), D585 Ashburton East.

Dr. Bob Graham (Ed.D) hails from Texas and resides in South Africa for his humanitarian work with the Children's Resiliency Project. Bob spends most of his leisurely time photographing wildlife, including birdlife, which consists of nearly 750 southern African species. He also publishes several of his images, including a monthly bird of the month blog for Skyways Magazine, which are found on Airlink flights in Africa. Bob lives in Ashburton and often spends time in the Lower Mpushini Valley photographing it's birdlife.

Join Andrew Flemming of the KZN Bee Farmers Association at the Ashburton Aloe Festival for his talk "Bees & Beekeeping: A Lifelong Passion" at 09h00 on Sunday 5th July at Galago Farm (Venue B), D585 Ashburton East.

Andrew Flemming has been beekeeping for the past 15 years, developing his passion for bees and beekeeping from the age of twelve. In the past he ran around 130 hives, spread from Karkloof to Hillcrest and Underberg. Andrew does a lot of bee removals in and around the Hillcrest area. He has given several talks to schools in the Hillcrest area.

Join Aphiwe Mtetandaba of INR at the Ashburton Aloe Festival for her talk "Monitoring Rivers from the Sky: Using Drones to Understand Water Quality and River Health" at 13h30 on Sunday 5th July at Galago Farm (Venue B), D585 Ashburton East.

Aphiwe Mtetandaba is a PhD candidate in Hydrology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her research explores how drones and other remote-sensing tools can help us understand and monitor the health of rivers, wetlands, ponds, and other small water bodies in KwaZulu-Natal. Her work aims to improve how we monitor freshwater systems and support better environmental management and conservation.
