More than three years ago, when our son was just 9 years old, he helped nurture a Southern yellow-billed hornbill we found on the side of the road, unable to move or fly. For about two weeks, he lovingly cared for him. The bird became so tame that he followed him everywhere, a little shadow with feathers.
One day, while they were in the garden, he suddenly flew up into the nearest tall tree. Zazu was free and strong again. Our hearts were filled with both excitement and sadness all at once, joy in seeing him soaring, and the ache of letting him go.
A powerful reminder of nature’s resilience and the magic of watching life return to where it belongs.
