The Afro Marimba Funky Jazz Festival is an urban music festival where we want to convey the roots of African music focusing on South African percussive traditions. The festival was started by ML Zwai Mbula original from Cape Town, South Africa now reside in Oslo, Norway. Zwai Mbula is an educated musician/producer from the Universtity of Cape Town. The festival is a part of Sabela Production House
’ many projects, which basic intent is to offer South African Music, Dance, Theatre and Poetry education to young people. We offer a platform where young people use their talents to express themselves, and thus develop their creative abilities. At the base of our art forms is the South African percussive tradition, and we aim to reflect this in all our activities. We believe that the percussive element in South African music, dance, theatre and poetry is a very significant factor in the development of these art forms. Our projects strive to combine the art forms and put a specific focus on displaying how the South African percussive traditions are present in music, dance, theatre and poetry. The Afro Marimba Funky Jazz Festival started in Norway in 2009 with a South African music, dance and fashion show. A dance workshop was held in advance and the results were presented during the show, which was held at MS Innvik in Oslo. In July 2010 the festival was successfully completed for the first time in Cape Town, South Africa, and we are now in the preparatory stages for The Afro Marimba Funky Jazz Festival 2011, Oslo.
