Next up on the Dove Podium, a handpicked ensemble of Mr Langhams' choosing, to royally entertain you in the picturesque setting of the High Peak District.

For those followers who couldn't attend the Centre of the Universe on Sunday, and indeed followers not familiar with Trudgeons Trad Jazz Troubadours, here's a taster of the energy they exude. Discussions underway for their return.

If we had a Loyalty Card scheme for musicians appearing on the famed Dove Podium, we would probably run out of ink stamping John Hallams' card. One thing is certain though, John always brings the cream of his musical coterie to royally entertain our Dove supporters. We look forward to welcoming friends old and new on March 15th.

Once again we must extend our most grateful thanks to Sarah Spencer for bringing her ‘Electrifying Transatlantic Band’ of handpicked, magical musicians’ to royally entertain us in the Dove Village Hall last month. These wonderful purveyors of the music of the Crescent City gave our audience their regular ‘Quota of Quality Jazz’ in abundance. Don’t forget that they will be returning in 2026 to transfix you once again. Our Sunday Afternoon ‘Gatherings’ that feature ‘Coteries’ of people with a passionate liking for our brand of Jazz continue to attract sizeable numbers to enjoy their wondrous wares! The switch to Sunday Afternoons has been all good news so far with both our audiences and our performers. We are well on the way to completing a goodly line up for you in 2026 with a mixture of the tried and trusted, ‘John Hallam’s Quintet,’ ‘Tom Langhams Hot Fingers with Emily,’ along with his ‘Latchlifters’ and ‘The Dove Naughty Boys,’ with a sprinkling of new Bands to Dove ‘The Adrian Cox Trio’ and ‘Trudgeon’s Trad Jazz Troubadors.’

Tonight’s Band, ‘Paula Jackman’s Jazz Masters’ are a relatively new outfit on the British Jazz Scene. They make their first of what we hope will be many visits to the Centre of the Universe. The Jazz Masters were formed in 2022 by Paula, who is a fine clarinettist and saxophonist of many years standing who named the Band as a tribute to her late husband Brian Masters who was an outstanding and well respected banjo player. Tonight’s collection of famed ‘Jazz Entertainers’ will include a powerful but slightly different rhythm section gathered around the drum kit of John Watson. A drummer who after seven years of keeping a steady beat with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra left to play with The Big Chris Barber Band in 2013 until its demise with the death of Chris aged 90 in 2021. He will be joined by that wonderful ‘Boogie Woogie’ pianist Hugh Crozier who is now married to Paula and will delight in demonstrating his complete mastery of piano playing in the style of ‘Fats Waller. ‘Lord’ Marc Easener on Sousaphone, a product of the London College of Music, a freelance player of Orchestral and West End Musicals fame will also be adding his vast experience to the rhythm section. Paula will be joined on the front line by another former Chris Barber Band Member trumpeter ‘Magic’ Mike Henry, who was his usual magical self with Sarah in October. Mark Aston will slide into position with his trusty trombone alongside Paula and Mike to complete this driving Ensemble.

I must make mention of the immense loss to our Jazz Scene that we have suffered recently with the untimely, sad passing of Pete Lay. A Distinguished Drummer, Leader of the Gambit Jazz Band, Jazz Festival and Jazz Club Promoter, New Orleans Tour Guide, The Founder and Editor of the Just Jazz Magazine and someone with an Encyclopaedic Knowledge of all things New Orleans and its Music. A most likeable individual who for almost forty years was an exceptionally good friend to me and Dove Jazz Club. Many grateful thanks for all you valued help Pete over the years. Our thoughts are very much with your wife Heather; RIP old friend.

On Sunday the 21st December at our ‘Christmas Special’ you will be entertained by a Band in its infancy called ‘The Hot Tamales’ that has only just set out on what we trust will be a long lasting journey on the British Jazz Circuit. It is jointly led by two regular performers on our ‘Well-Trod Boards’ Joules Aldridge and Richard Bennett, who makes a most welcome return to the British Jazz Scene! It promises to be yet another great Afternoon here in Dove. One that would be considerably improved by having your good self in our audience supporting our popular Jazz Recitals in the comfortable Concert Room and Lounge with its user friendly licensed bar, famed for its Tea and Coffee not forgetting its ‘Plumptious McBurnham’s Pork Pies!’ There will of course be the usual free Seasonal upper crust, deep filled mince pies and tasty savouries and nibbles.

Way back now at the beginning of July when our last promotion was staged we all enjoyed a varied programme of New Orleans Jazz from the competent musicians who vent their musical talents in a Combo that goes out under the name of the ‘Night Owls.’ Several of those present informed me that they thought that the cultured musical skills displayed by these knowledgeable members of the musical profession, all of whom earn their livings working full time in the upper echelons of the music industry, deserved a larger audience than we managed to attract on the day. There does not appear to be an obvious reason why this was the case on the day but of course there is just no accounting for the vagaries of musical audiences as we at Dove have come to appreciate after forty years of being actively involved with the promotion of Traditional Jazz under its ‘Diverse Umbrella.’

What a ‘Fantastic’ group of musical friends from near and far the treasured Mr Langham has kindly persuaded to tread the boards of the stage at the ‘Village Hall’ to provide your forthcoming ‘Sunday Afternoon Jazz Fix’ on the 28th September for little reward for themselves. I keep on gazing at the ‘Stellar’ names of the ‘Constituent Members of Tom’s Distinguished Orchestra’ and have come to the conclusion that I have no alternative but to advise the Village Hall Folk to take out additional insurance against the very real danger of the roof being blown off our indispensable Village Hall!

Tom of course will be leading the Band with a generous portion of his famed panache and his sharing with you his ‘Encyclopaedic Jazz Knowledge’ in addition to making his inimitable and dazzling vocal, banjo and guitar contributions. What Leslie Welch ‘The Memory Man’ of yester year was to the Sporting World in the 40’s and 50’s, Tom is to the Jazz Fraternity of today! Tom was a leading light in the Band when we staged the first ever Jazz Concert to reverberate in the Village Hall long, long ago in 1992! He will be augmented with a rhythm section containing two notable stalwarts of our Jazz World in Nick Ward, the famed ‘Regimental Military Historian’ with his prized ‘Illuminated Grand Jazz Percussion Kit’ from the 1930’s. All things bass will be under the umbrella of the handsome, irrepressible Malcolm Sked demonstrating his impeccable, acclaimed musical dexterity on tuba, string bass and possibly Sousaphone if there is room for it in the car. It will be a pleasure to welcome this accomplished Blacksmith back into our fold.

We will be blessed to have in our midst today a brace of the most ‘Notable Doyens of the European Jazz Circuit’ revealing to you first hand just why they are at the very pinnacle of their chosen profession, I refer of course to no lesser persons than Trevor Whiting and Enrico Tomasso. Trevor was originally what we in Dove call a ‘Brass Band Chap’ playing a tenor horn in the school band. On hearing records of Sidney Bechet, the New Orleans clarinettist he decided to become a self-taught reeds player. This resulted in him forming his own Band as well as playing with distinction in those of Ken Colyer and Chris Barber. It is good to welcome Enrico back, who was five when he picked up his first trumpet. Encouraged by his musical family he studied at the Leeds College of Music; where his fantasticx musical career began, playing with Ken Mackintosh’s Big Band. This was followed by spells with numerous of the top bands such as the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, many of the Keith Nichol’s Orchestras, along with Acker Bilk. You do not manage to be voted ‘Best Trumpet Player’ in the ‘British Jazz Awards’ on six occasions without having a bit of a grasp of playing the trumpet.

Sunday October 26th sees a return for the ever popular Sarah Spencer’s Transatlantic Band when in addition to the fantastic music we, like today, will have our usual array of popular beverages from the Bar, the oft financial lifeline of the ‘Quality Raffle’ and our tasty and succulent ‘Butcher Burnham Pork Pies.’
