What is Myasthenia Gravis (MG)?

Myasthenia Gravis is a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. 🧠➡️💪

It happens when the immune system interrupts the signals between nerves and muscles.

It makes everyday tasks harder—like talking 🗣️, chewing 🍽️, lifting arms 🙋‍♀️, or even keeping eyes open 👀.

The weakness often gets worse with activity and improves with rest 😴—a pattern many people with MG know all too well.

MG is invisible to many, but very real to those living with it. 💙

“A thymectomy scar runs across my chest. The marks of steroid-induced weight gain are etched into my body. Illness defines my past and shapes my future.

I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis (MG) in 1990, when I was 15 years old. Since then, I’ve taken multiple medications and therapies, dealt with eye patches, slurred speech, walking aids, and a revolving door of physicians, infections, and side effects.

MG didn’t come alone. It was a launching pad for bronchitis, pneumonia, microscopic colitis [a form of inflammatory bowel disease], fertility challenges, low white blood counts, and elevated platelets.” -Anna Reid

Most doctors (across all specialties) consider seeing more than a dozen MG patients their whole career, to be a fairly high volume overall. Even in neurology, many doctors don’t see many MG patients and only hear about it occasionally in their schooling or at conferences.

While MG is still quite rare, awareness, education and resources continue to grow year after year as the hard work of so many push back against the stigmas and raise their voices for others. 💕👏🏻
