Im inviting you to join me in intercessory prayer to change history

I’ve always been confused how African Americans could adopt Christianity, the religion of their oppressors, but then I read The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone.

Cone explains that from the perspective of the oppressed, Jesus dying on the cross was just another example of a black man being lynched by lighter skinned men. In other words Jesus was familiar to them, thats why they adopted him. For black people Jesus death on the cross wasn’t theoretical. Jesus wasn’t just their savior he was their ally, their colleague their co sufferer. The cross was just another day at the office for people who had been kidnapped and forced into labor and when they resisted here comes the lynching tree.

Cone also helpfully reframes the ever mysterious term principalities and powers and makes it into something that is grounded in reality. Rather than floating clouds of demons/ prince of Persia bu****it, Cone says it’s much more immediate and touchable. Principalities and powers are the men who develop dark networks of power on earth. People like Viktor Orban, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Kim Jong-Un, Jair Bolsanaro, Putin and countless leaders in Africa and of course our own Donald John Trump.

Black African Americans were drug over to the shores of what has become known as the USA by self centered, greedy, mean spirited religious men. Clearly these men were Principalities and powers - demonically inspired people using the name of Jesus to sanitize and justify their sins.

Nevertheless, Africans were able to separate Jesus from Christianity. It’s still a mystery to me as to how, but then I cant name one distant relative who was lynched while every African American alive today can name at least one if not several.

Where does this strong man impulse come from that feeds Principalities and powers?

After reading The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and Sapiens A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari it became clear that this pattern of authoritarian control has been part of humanity from the beginning. The default pull for humans is fear which principalities and powers and demonically inspired men migrate toward like bacteria to a wound.

Principalities and powers systems exploit, foster and cultivate this fear for their own benefit just like white Christian Americans did with Africans. Then whole systems of government evolve to sustain this fear and feed off of it.

Graeber and Yuval Noah Harari document times where say for 500 years experimental communities would break away and form more egalitarian ways of living - what we would derisively call socialism - where people had what they needed to live and no one person dominated the scene.

But they also document patterns where humans would choose against their own self interest due to schismogenesis

“Gregory Bateson coined the term “schismogenesis” to describe people’s tendency to define themselves against one another… taking extreme positions they would never embrace under ordinary circumstances, just to show how much they completely reject the others points.”

Meaning humans fear drive them to reject help others could offer. They cut off their nose to spite their face. Principalities and Powers feed off these tendencies of fear and pride and organize governmental systems that benefit them but not the people

This is where we currently find ourselves in history

Trump is leveraging everyone of these tendencies to appeal to the fear, pride and grievance that resides in our hearts

Democracy is a break away from these demonically inspired forms of controlling people. It is the egalitarian impulse that says people can organize themselves. Of course it “wobbles” but nevertheless it “works”

What does this mean?

Every war depends on luck and mistakes

D Day was open battle field frontal assault - everyone saw it

D Day was successful because Hi**er was asleep at the wheel when he was needed to make decisions. Because leaders of Principalities and Powers are necessarily narcissistic. Because “they are the only one” who can make the decision. They create bottle necks. Hi**er was sleeping and his generals were afraid to wake him.

Trump is our current version of Hi**er. He is vulnerable to making the same mistakes.

Please join me in interceding for our little democracy. We need to remain a beacon to the rest of the world. It is not inevitable that Trump wins. Democracy must live. We are here. We are the ones who need to sustain it.

Intercessory prayer is a mystery. For me it means persistent asking God to intervene. To cause the kinds of mistakes and miscues that accompany every successful battle. Please join me in asking God for this kind of intervention.

It feels small to me - like 5 loaves and 2 fish or a cup of cold water. But since its all we have and if we bring it with a genuine heart - it is all Jesus needs to make things work

Forgive my non theological approach to this tricky topic. Its all I can come up with after 56 years of following Jesus and observing history.

Let us pray

With the election and holidays looming people are feeling anxious. Let’s give them some hope and maybe something even more concrete - a tool they can use to enable them to not lose the people they want or need to keep in their life.

People would love to hear from people who, despite the toxic social environment we’re currently navigating as a nation, have managed to sustain friendships at work, church, family and school

With that as our goal, 3Practice Circles is presenting Uncommon Friends or Frenemies - how to keep the friends you don’t want to lose

Each episode will feature two frenemies, people who have remained friends in spite of their profound disagreements about _____________(see list above) .

Each of them will get 2 minutes on each of several topics, and then people on the call will ask I’d Be Curious To Know questions. A Referee will keep the exchange moving from one topic to another for about 90 minutes.

First Up : "Like Father (not) Like Son'

Jim and Josh Henderson love each other but profoundly disagree about politics.

The Frame for their Circle is “________ clearly represents a threat to democracy which is why I’m voting for___________”

The Rules:

3Practice Circles are generally private and confidential. We record them but only for learning purposes. We never share anything that happens in a Circle without people’s permission

This series of 33Practice Circleswill not be private or confidential. Anything shared in these circles will be broadcast via Facebook Live, Youtube , Instagram, or TikTok. "These Circles will be as public as possible"

Why? We have been hearing from people who want to listen to 3Practice Circles as if they were a podcast. So, this is a test to see how that works.

We want more people to know where to find tools they can use to respond to the perennial polarization-triggering moments that occur around elections and holidays

Do you have a Frenemy? Someone with whom you know you always disagree about certain issues? Someone who triggers you so much that you need to take breaks so you can gather your thoughts? Someone you have learned to listen to and who may or may not have changed your mind about something you previously were “certain” about?

Please don't name someone here in public without them knowing you are doing it but do DM or Message me your Frenemy Story - were looking for the real thing

Ok I'll go first - For my money Van Jones captured the moment most succinctly with " OLD MAN v CON MAN" (and the old man lost this round)

This is show business not government business
This is entertainment not legislation
This is feelings not facts

Trump is got away with murder and no one was there to expose him. Someone not named Joe needs to stand up to him and expose his craziness using the same tools he does-

Its World Wide Wrestling - sorry thats apparently how we like our presidential campaigns to operate

Good by 1950 - Hello 2030s

Dems need to "own" this - suck it up and replace Joe with someone young people might actually care about and her name is not Kamala- She needs to stay so she can eventually help govern but she is not show biz enough for the moment

While I personally prefer Amy Klobuchar or Cory Booker

The only person the Dems have who provides the right mix of show business with actual governance experience is Gavin Newsom

He could eviscerate Trump verbally
He could embarrass Trump intellectually
He could trigger Trump emotionally
He could do to Trump what Trump did to Joe
Put Newsome in front of Trump and watch The Donald look 78

Dems need someone who will to one job from here to Nov

Expose Trump to a small % of his followers as the Con Man that he is - just let him talk and then take him apart

Demonstrate strong leadership while Trump fakes it in front of his misguided fans - you only need to tilt a very small % - it's doable in the hands of a skilled entertainer.

Joe could make himself a national treasure - a hero by waking up tomorrow and saying - Well I watched the tape and while I don't think that's me it clearly was - so for the good of the country I am stepping aside for a new candidate named Gavin Newsome

BTW - Im completely aware of Newsomes downsides as a candidate but look at Trump - Exhibit A of how bad you can be and still have people overlook it - Its not about the facts or the future its about the person - do they inspire us and give us hope do we trust them?

When you receive an inoculation what happens is that you are warding off a larger disease by voluntarily introducing a small amount of it into your system.

I think Newsome has just enough of Trump in his personality to defeat the horrible disease of Trump.

Needed to put this in writing somewhere. Why not FB :-)

Having failed to persuade the majority of US citizens to follow their beliefs and adopt their morals (despite historically speaking a huge head start), evangelicals have chosen to take a page out of the playbook of their once hated religious enemies, The Roman Catholics who during The Inquisition opted to use force to get people to adopt their morals. (IVF banned, The Ten Commandments ordered to be posted on walls of all schools in Louisiana)

At this point the failure of evangelicalism as a movement is so patently obvious (cue the next mega church pastor - sexual abuser) as to be comedy.

It's enough to drive Jesus to take up smoking.
