One of the many reasons we are so excited to invite you to the Shroud Encounter (totally free) is that you can view a 1:1 reproduction photograph of the Shroud of Turin. The reproduction on display, owned by Mr. Breault, is taken from the original negatives of Mr. Barrie M. Schwortz, principal photographer of the Shroud of Turin Research Project, the last time the Shroud was extensively scientifically examined and photographed. A very limited number of these reproductions exist and it is the same image you will see on display in museums dedicated to the Shroud of Turin.

In 1988, radiocarbon tests were conducted under the guidance of the British Museum, but the data from those experiments was never released to the public... until a freedom of information act request forced the museum to do so in 2018. The data revealed strong inconsistencies in the data and possible contamination of the samples which were taken from the shroud. Many shroud researchers have stated that the worst possible place to take a sample would be from the "top" corners because this area was where people would hold the shroud up for public exhibition in the middle ages. If any area would be the least reliable... it would be exactly from where the samples were removed in 1988! Many scholars have asked the Pope to allow new samples to be taken for updated testing.

Fact: The image of the man does not pe*****te the cloth as it would if any artistic substance was used by someone to create the man’s image. The image affects only the cloth’s top two microfibers. It is so thin it can be scraped off with a razor blade. Furthermore, the image is uniform in intensity throughout the entire cloth with no variation in density or color—an impossible feat for any artist of the Middle Ages.

Fact: The mysterious image is the result of dehydration and oxidation of the cellulose fibers composing the linen. There is no known artistic process used in the middle ages that could account for the image.

Fact: Unlike the image, the blood stains on the Shroud do fully pe*****te the cloth front to back. The blood stains appeared on the cloth first followed by the image of the man. There is no image under the blood.

Come and see a professional replica of the shroud, hear the lecture of a lifelong shroud researcher, and bring your questions to the Shroud Encounter at Racine First Baptist Church in Racine, Ohio, on November 2, at 6:00 PM.

The great enigma of the Shroud is the faint, front and back full-body image of a 5’10” crucified man. The “man in the Shroud” is characterized by long hair, full beard and a pattern of bloodstains that are compatible with the torturous wounds inflicted upon Jesus as recorded in all four New Testament Bible Gospel accounts.

Here are some of the wounds suffered by the Man in the Shroud as seen on the cloth:

Over 100 whip marks on every portion of his body, left by scourging from Roman flagra and consistent with ancient Roman whips used at the time.

Blood stains that formed a circle around the top of his head are consistent with the crown of thorns.

Severely bruised knees that could have resulted from several falls. (The Bible says Christ fell three times on his way to his crucifixion.

Blood stains around holes in the man’s wrists and feet that would be consistent with the aftermath of large spikes; the marks of crucifixion.

Blood stains around a large wound that would be consistent with an injury sustained by a spear in his side.

The man in the Shroud did not have broken legs which is compatible with the biblical account. The legs of both thieves crucified on either side of Jesus were broken to speed asphyxia and death. Jesus was already dead, so the Roman’s did not need to break his legs.

The Shroud of Turin - In 1898 an Italian photographer named Secondo Pia obtained permission to apply the “new” technology of photography to the Shroud. When developing his photos, Pia was astonished to discover that the Shroud photographs as a photo-negative image. That means the Shroud is a negative image that shows up positive when seen in a photographic negative. How could any ancient forger have faked this result?

Did you know? In 1978 a large team of American scientists traveled to Turin, Italy to conduct an in-depth scientific examination of the Shroud. The expedition, under the auspices of the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP), was the first such extensive scientific examination of the Shroud, and remains to this date the most extensive hands-on study of the Shroud ever undertaken. The STURP team spent over two years prior to embarking for Turin planning dozens of specific data gathering experiments, measurements and tests. To support the effort they carried several tons of support equipment and scientific instruments. The team arrived in Turin in early October 1978 following a public display of the Shroud to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Shroud's arrival in Turin. For five (5) full days from October 8th through the 13th the STURP team studied the Shroud around the clock in a large room at the royal palace adjoining the Turin Cathedral. Each 24-hour period was broken down into shifts that allowed the work to proceed uninterrupted while some STURP staff slept and others conducted research.
