Before diving into abstraction, Merel Jansen spent years exploring figuration. This painting is part of her earlier body of work, intimate portraits where the body, the fabric, and the space are treated with the same attention and complexity.
Merel was trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent and quickly developed a unique voice, blending classical techniques with contemporary composition. Her early work already revealed a fascination for fragmentation, layering, and ambiguity themes that she continues to explore in her recent abstract paintings.
Her solo exhibition at Nodenaysteen brings together these two energies: figuration and abstraction, body and color, presence and erasure.
Join us in discovering the full scope of her practice.
