The first custom order board for the year is done and delivered. A maple and purple heart edge grain board with 3/4" and 1/4" strips and 2" thick. I have to admit, I do like the look of the partial juice groove on this one. This one weighed on at 24.3 lbs, but the deep finger grooves on the sides make lifting and maneuvering light work.

This 26" x 19" Maple end grain cutting board is finished and delivered. Made to order for a customer at my Selah Middle School bazaar this year after seeing the Black Walnut butcher block I had on display.

This end grain cutting board features a deep 3/4" juice groove, finger grips, and weighs in at a whopping 28 pounds.

I've had this chunk of Black Walnut for a while now just waiting for it to dry out, and it was definitely worth the wait...

I've had this chunk of Black Walnut for a while now just waiting for it to dry out, and it was definitely worth the wait. On this board I recessed the feet about 1/4" into the bottom of the board, giving it an almost floating feeling when it's on the counter top. With deep finger slots, and a deep juice groove, its owner will have a beautiful piece to use and display.

From a piece of burl my grandpa gave me, to a unique and colorful blade style putter.

After using my other putter for the last few months, I've wanted to try a blade style putter but I also like the milled face most popular putters have. So after searching for replacement putter inserts, I came across , who provides custom milled copper and aluminum inserts.

Starting the milling of the burl was tricky. With the awkward curve as well as the varying thickness of the burl in certain places, I had to be careful while cutting off pieces to produce a square block to start shaping the putter. Using a piece of hard maple, I cut out a rough template of the copper insert. With an 1/8" flush trim bit, I cut into the burl blank so that the insert would fit about 1mm proud of the putting surface. Using a few different sized chisels and a rounded file, I cleaned up the edges for a fairly clean fit.

Carving the back side of the putter was tricky since I only had straight chisels. With the band saw I cut a rounded corner out of the top side. I then used chisels to cut the curve that matches the rounded bottom of the putter. A round carving gouge would have been ideal but I'm happy with the results.

With the limited amount of material in this putter, getting it to the desired weight of 350 grams was impossible. With a finished weight of 298 grams it hits surprisingly well and fits my putting stroke fairly well.

A backing I did for a shadow box a while back. I resawed a piece of black walnut to about 7mm to fit the original backing shown in the 4th picture. Then I used a flush trim router bit to match the size of the original piece. The figuring in the board was perfect as it almost resembles mountains being the landscape engraving.

A new end grain cutting board I had out at my last show this weekend. The grain from the Wenge in this board adds some nice texture, along with the sap wood from the cherry. This board features black walnut, wenge, cherry, and maple.
