Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed our nation.
We honor the 2,977 innocent lives taken that day, including the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, 37 Port Authority Police officers, EMTs, paramedics, other first responders, and the thousands of civilians who never made it home to their families.
We remember those who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember the courage of strangers helping strangers, the first responders who climbed those stairs knowing others needed them, and the countless acts of bravery and compassion that took place in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.
We also remember those who survived that day but carried its effects with them for years afterward, including the first responders, recovery workers, and others who later lost their lives to illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero.
Twenty-five years have passed, but time does not lessen their sacrifice or our responsibility to remember.
To the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and paramedics, Port Authority personnel, military members, dispatchers, recovery workers, civilians, and families whose lives were forever changed—we remember you.
May we never forget the lives that were lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the unity our country found in the days that followed.
