A small pair of children’s shoes, bound together with linen, was discovered beneath the roof of a nineteenth-century cottage near Strokestown, County Roscommon.

We may never know who wore them or why they were placed there. Yet these fragile shoes survived and became the inspiration for the Bronze Shoes that now mark the journey of Ireland’s Famine emigrants.

Soon, their story will continue here in New Jersey.

During the An Gorta Mor, the Great Famine, thousands of Irish men, women, and children fled Ireland aboard overcrowded emigrant ships that became known as “coffin ships.” Disease, hunger, and terrible conditions meant that many never survived the journey across the Atlantic.

But countless others did. They arrived in places such as New York, Boston, Quebec, and other ports with few possessions and the hope of beginning again. From those survivors came families and communities whose descendants now number in the millions. 🇮🇪

Could your family be part of that story?

The Global Irish Famine Way New Jersey is working to preserve the stories of those who left Ireland during the Famine years and the generations that followed.

If your ancestors came from Ireland during this period, we invite you to share your family story. Even a name, hometown, approximate year of arrival, photograph, letter, passenger record, or story passed down through your family can be a place to begin.
