Historic moment for those who live on one of the five US territories and anyone who believes in human rights! Thanks to the hard work of Right To Democracy, the DOJ has now affirmed that the Insular Cases are racist and deserve no place in US law. These cases are still the basis for many decisions affecting those living in Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa.
What are the insular cases? "The Insular Cases are a series of early 1900s Supreme Court decisions that denied the overseas U.S. territories democracy and self-determination based on the Supreme Courtβs judgment that their residents were alien races and savage tribes."
Thank you to Right To Democracy and my friends Adi Martinez-Roman and Neil Weare for your hard work.
