“We were very pleased to find out that even though life span is a very complicated trait caused by variation on a large number of loci, [...] the number of loci that are in common is a totally finite number. So, we can imagine going on to the next stage and investigating one gene at a time and in combination,” Mackay said.

CLEMSON, South Carolina — Scientists believe about 25 percent of the differences in human life span is determined by genetics — with the rest determined by environmental and lifestyle factors. But they don’t yet know all the genes that contribute to a long life. A study published March 5, 2020...

When these new-and-improved beta cells were infused into diabetic mice, their blood sugar levels were stabilized, rendering the diabetes “functionally cured” for up to nine months.

Diabetes is characterized by trouble producing or managing insulin, and one emerging treatment involves converting stem cells into beta cells that secrete the hormone. Now, scientists have developed a more efficient method of doing just that, and found that implanting these cells in diabetic mice…

That's what we are talking about!!

"We are hopeful that targeting the molecular drivers of senescence will lead us to safe and effective medicines that help more people stay as healthy as possible, for as long as possible."

Scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Harvard University have discovered that mitochondria trigger senescence, the sleep-like state of aged cells, through communication with the cell's nucleus—and identified an FDA-approved drug that helped suppress the damaging effe...

“With the new base-editing technique the mutation in the CFTR gene can be detected and repaired without creating further damage in the genome”

Scientists at the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands used base editing, an approach to CRISPR that doesn’t involve cutting DNA, to correct a gene mutation that causes cystic fibrosis (CF). They believe the study, which they performed in stem cells from CF patients, provides evidence that a dise...

The drop in cancer mortality continues a longstanding decline that began a quarter-century ago.

From Peter Attia. Sad 😢

“According to a new study in JAMA, life expectancy (LE) at birth stopped increasing since 2010 and actually decreased in the US for three consecutive years. To put this in perspective, the last time we saw three consecutive years of declining LE was 100 years ago, coinciding with the flu epidemic of 1918.

Perhaps surprisingly, increased mortality rates in midlife—defined rather broadly as 25-64 years old—are driving the stall, and eventual decline, in LE. Within this group, the largest increases in mortality rate occurred in the subset of people aged 25-34, and it was the increase in drug overdoses, su***des, and alcohol-related diseases that were identified as three key causes of death in this group. Between 1999 and 2017, midlife mortality from drug overdoses increased by nearly 400% (from 6.7 deaths/100,000 to 32.5), alcoholic liver disease increased by 40.6% (from 6.4 to 8.9), and su***de rates increased by 38.3% (from 13.4 to 18.6). This triad is referred to as “deaths of despair” by one research group.”
