A memorial concert to celebrate the life of Richard Watson will be held in the Valparaiso University Chapel of the Resurrection on Sunday, December 7, 7:00p. Admission is free, there are no tickets, and everyone is welcome.
Richard Watson taught low brass at Valparaiso University for more than 30 years. Tragically, he was killed in a motorcycle accident last summer. Prof. Watson, affectionately nicknamed โMr. Lobloโ, taught scores of students at VU and from the schools in northwest Indiana. He also served as principal tuba in the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra, trombonist in the Together Band, and as an award-winning motorcycle safety instructor for ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education). Before teaching at VU, Prof. Watson served for 12 years as principal tuba in the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. He earned degrees in tuba performance from the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.
The memorial concert will last about one hour. A massed band will remember Richard by playing Them Basses by Getty Huffine, A Touch of Tuba by Art Dedrick, Reflection and Dance by Lissa May, and other selections. The tubas, euphoniums, and trombones will play A Hymn for Richard, composed by local music educator and tubist Matthew Hibbets. A quintet from the South Shore Brass Band will perform Softly as I Leave You by Alfred De Vita. VU voice professor Anne Marie Bice will sing Bridge Over Troubled Water, former Richard Watson student Dakota Maze will guest conduct one selection, and Jeff Brown and Jeff Doebler will speak about Richard. Prof. Brown serves VU as percussion instructor, and is the former Jazz Ensemble director. Dr. Doebler serves VU as director of music education and bands.
