Let's talk about family. I don't mean the TV sitcom family where all of life's problems are solved in 30 minutes. I'm talking real life, sometimes dysfunctional, some family members not talking to each other...family. We all have that kind of family at one time or another in our lives, and if you were to tell me you didn't, I would not believe you. So what makes those types of families? Is it adults playing favorites among their children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews? Is it enabling, entitlement, jealousy, resentment? There are so many different reasons why people are the way they are, and sometimes that overflows into their family.
Let me tell you a story. I know a lady who grew up being the apple of her grandparent's eye. She could do no wrong. They taught her valuable life lessons that she still carries with her. Dare I say, she was spoiled by her grandparents. There were very few times throughout her childhood that she wasn't with them. Even as a small child, she was told others were jealous. This carried through to the teenage years, and we all know teens can sometimes feel entitled. They can act like they know everything and no one around them knows anything. There were times that the entitlement was overbearing and alongside it came the enabling from the loving, doting grandparents. That is a dangerous combination, friends. Thankfully, she grew up a little bit and grew out of that entitlement. The love her grandparents had for her overpowered everything else... including the relationship with the rest of her family. As an adult, she no longer speaks to the majority of her family. Is it because of the jealousy she grew up hearing her grandmother speak about? Is it because her own spoiled and entitled attitude ruined the relationships with the other family members? Or is it because there was never a real relationship between her and any of her other family members and now they are all strangers?
I would like to hear your opinions on this family dynamic and feel free to share your own family stories...but remember to always be respectful of others. Tell me your family stories, because when Insomnia Talks....we all listen.
