Cassandra Wilson’s unique blend of jazz, blues, folk, and R&B was groundbreaking.

Born in Mississippi, the birthplace of the blues, she drew from these traditions and fused them into an expression distinctly her own.

Wilson carried forward the flame of the blues women who came before her—Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith—and of jazz greats such as Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan. In her music, their influence became part of a living continuum, carried forward into the modern era and transformed through her singular voice.

Although she will be missed physically, she now joins the women who came before her, and continue to touch, move and inspire generations to come.

In 2023 the Angolan/SouthAfrican artist Helena Uambembe sat down with The Voice of a Woman at Art Basel in Paris, to discuss her first solo show in Germany at MMK Frankfurt, which had just opened.

Helena Uambembe‘s artistic practice — spans painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance — tracing the legacies of colonialism, conflict, and migration. She works between archival research, oral memory, and personal narrative to explore the impact of war and displacement.

Her work has been exhibited at the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Kunsthalle Bremen; the Moritzburg Museum, Halle (Saale); KOW, Berlin; and Villa Romana, Florence; 36th Bienal de São Paulo; 13th Berlin Biennale; the 13th Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art; La Biennale de Lubumbashi, and the public program of the British Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale.

Uambembe has been awarded the ars viva prize (2024), the Baloise Art Prize (2022), and the David Koloane Award (2019), and was a fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2023.

In 2026, her work is included in Sound Shapes at the Galleria Borghese, Rome, and Mémoires voyageuses (Travelling Memories) at Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel. In 2027, she will participate in the 17th Sharjah Biennial curated by Angela Harutyunyan and Paula Nascimento.

This performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill of her 1998 hit “Ex-Factor” too place on Friday August 7th, 2026 in the UK for her “Diaspora Calling” Festival.

The song was written and produced by Ms. Hill in 1998 for her debut solo studio album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

The song features a sample of “Can It Be All So Simple” by Wu-Tang Clan, and therefore has its songwriters credited along with Ms. Hill on the song.

The song was released as the second single from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” on December 14, 1998, by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records.

SPIN Magazine named “ExFactor” the third best single of 1999 and
other publications named it one of the best R&B songs of the 1990s while both Time Magazine ranked it among the greatest breakup songs of all time.

It has also been sampled numerous times, most notably on Drake’s “Nice For What” and Cardi B’s “Be Careful”, additionally artists such as Beyoncé and Kelly Clarkson have covered the song during live performances.

In June 2026, CBS News included the song in its list of the 250 essential American songs of the past 250 years.
