Sonic Frontiers Concert Series

Sonic Frontiers Concert Series From 2010-2019, the Sonic Frontiers concert series presented nearly 60 adventurous music events to the community. The series is on indefinite hiatus.

The Sonic Frontiers concert series at The University of Alabama was dedicated to presenting adventurous music to the both the University and the broader West Alabama community, but is now on indefinite hiatus. From 2010-2019, the series presented nearly 60 adventurous music events to the community, all free of charge, featuring both local and nationally and internationally recognized artists. The

series was designed to further artistic diversity on the UA campus, and to foster creative exchange between music professionals, UA students, faculty and staff and the greater community, through performances, class visits, and discussions with world-class performers of pioneering music. All events were FREE. These events were made possible by support from the University of Alabama's New College, The College of Arts and Sciences, The School of Music, and Creative Campus.

As The University of Alabama's Sonic Frontiers Concert Series prepares for its final concert (Sonic Frontiers Farewell: Multi-instrumentalist Milo Fine on Tues. 4/9), we'll be looking back at some of the wonderful events from the past decade of our activities, over the next week or two...we hope you'll indulge us!

Although there were more than a dozen germinal SF events dating back to 2008, in both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, UA's SF series officially kicked off in August 2010 with a beautiful 2-hour long mobile outdoor concert in the Moundville Archaeological Park and Museum with SF founder Dr. Andrew Raffo Dewar (soprano sax), LaDonna Smith(viola), Jill Burton (voice), Claire Elizabeth Barratt (movement), and Evan Lipson (bass).

The event was beautifully documented in photographs by New College alum Lydia Atkins.

Featuring movement by Claire Elizabeth Barratt (Asheville, NC) and music by violist/violinist LaDonna Smith (Birmingham, AL), bassist Evan Lipson (Brooklyn, NY & Chattanooga, TN) and soprano saxophonist Andrew Raffo Dewar (Tuscaloosa, AL). Featuring movement by Claire Elizabeth Barratt (Ashevill...

After nearly a decade of supporting adventurous music in Tuscaloosa, the Sonic Frontiers Farewell: Multi-instrumentalist Milo Fine is one week away!

SF's final guest, Minneapolis-based virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Milo Fine, has a 25 year history with series founder Dr. Andrew Raffo Dewar, as a mentor and colleague, so there are a number of reasons why he was a fitting choice to close out the series' activities - read about some of those reasons in this post by Mr. Fine himself:

On the rare occasions I’ve been afforded the opportunity to present my work outside the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, the logistics have consistently been less than ideal. (The reasons for this state of affairs are clear. As I’ve reiterated too many times, I am not a “viable commodity” in the n...
