The month we’ve all been waiting for is finally here.

The nights are getting darker. The air is getting cooler. The shadows grow longer……and something about October just feels different.🌙

It’s the season of haunted houses, horror movies, creepy stories, jack-o-lanterns, costumes, monsters, and things that lurk in the darkness.

The season where being scared is half the fun.👻

So close your windows. Lock your doors. Turn off the lights. Put on your favorite horror movie.

And whatever you do……..

Welcome Fear Factory LLC ! This preservation artist works in wet specimens, taxidermy, and dark decor, all ethically sourced. The diaphonized pieces are cleared and stained so the bones read through the glass, and every feline specimen they sell sends money back to local rescues. Their coffin shadow boxes and standing taxidermy mounts are worth a closer look, too.

A frog that holds your spare change belongs at Black Swamp Horror & Oddities.

Welcome Whimsyfaecreations! This fiber artist and crochet designer makes little creatures with plenty of personality. The frog coin purse has a metal clasp for a mouth and a tiny mushroom charm at its side. Their stitched dolls and ghosts tucked into corked jars are worth a closer look, too.

Meet Blazingdane, joining us at Black Swamp Horror & Oddities!

Their dragon-eye planter caught our attention, and the Frankenstein's monster planter looks right at home with a succulent sprouting from its head. Blazingdane makes decorative and wearable art, including the black-and-red beaded spider pictured here.

This spring the The Toledo Museum of Art ran an exhibit called Cursed! Lead curse tablets, amulets, magical papyri, on loan from the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Met. The oldest pieces dated to 2000 BCE.

One of the papyrus cases had a curtain over it. The ink is so light-sensitive you had to lift the fabric yourself to look.

Rachael went, obviously.

It closed July 3, and all of it went back to London and Paris and New York.

Which is roughly why we started this. People here showed up for it. There is just nowhere permanent for that to go.

Madfield Cauldron makes what a witchy altar is missing.

One-woman shop. Wire-wrapped stones, hair clips, car vent charms, incense. A white jade snowflake for grounding. A polychrome jasper heart for your rearview mirror. A vampire teeth clip, wire-wrapped by hand, no two the same.

Their incense already sits on shelves at other metaphysical shops. At BSHO you get to dig through the actual bins.

Vendor spotlight: Mr. Pat's 31 Days of Halloween.

Every October, Mr. Pat reviews one horror movie a day. October 1 through Halloween, thirty-one movies, thirty-one reviews. Fifteen seasons finished, none missed. Each film gets scored on the Dr. Chainsaws scale, 1 to 10.

The first nine years were written on Facebook Notes. Facebook killed Notes, and those reviews went down with it. He and Ravenhurst have been pulling them back up one at a time to rebuild the full run.

Sixteen Octobers of a guy in Toledo watching horror movies and writing about them, because he wanted to.

Mr. Pat's 31 Days of Halloween joins us March 6-7, 2027. Lucas County Rec Center, Maumee.

We are not the only thing around here named after a wetland that has been gone for a hundred years.

Black Swamp Paranormal of NWO is joining us in March. Nadine and John have been investigating out of Toledo for years, and the motto on their page does the work better than anything we could write: "Do strange things with weird people."

No relation between the two Black Swamps. Same ground under both.

Find their booth and give them twenty minutes. They have been inside the buildings.
