A lot of people have been asking a good question lately:

Where did the term Latin Freestyle actually come from?

The music grew out of the early-1980s urban dance scene, especially in New York’s Latino communities, with Miami becoming another major center.

Before “Freestyle” became the common name, people inside the industry were calling the developing sound Latin hip-hop.

Young Latino artists and audiences were taking the electronic rhythms of electro and hip-hop and combining them with melodic R&B and pop vocals, romantic songwriting, dance-floor production, and Latin cultural influences.

As hip-hop became increasingly identified with rap, this vocal dance music became known as Freestyle.

And because the movement was so deeply connected to Latino artists, DJs, neighborhoods and audiences, Latin Freestyle became another way of identifying the music and its roots.

So when you hear us use the words Latin Freestyle, it is not a new marketing phrase.

It is part of the history of the music.
