Georgia Southern Gammas The Georgia Southern Colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated

During the fall of 1989, the foundation of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated was commenced by five collegiate women who recognized the need to form an organization that provided empowerment to women of all cultural backgrounds at the University of Iowa. Under the guidance of Esther Materon Arum and Mary Peterson, the vision of our five Founding Mothers came to fruition on Monday,

April 9, 1990, when the University of Iowa Panhellenic Council officially recognized the organization as a sorority. Seeking to join an organization that would acknowledge and represent all aspects of her diverse cultural background, Sister Sequoyah Benton discovered a solution. Thus, Sequoyah became dedicated to bringing Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated to Georgia Southern University. In the Fall of 2012, Sequoyah founded the Women’s Multicultural Society (WMS), a student organization whose sole purpose was to establish a colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma. On Friday, May 24, 2013, through hard work and perseverance, the WMS was officially recognized as the Georgia Southern Colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Incorporated. Since its establishment, the Georgia Southern Colony has initiated 16 women:
