The 509 region recently lost a basketball legend and the father of Eastern Washington University head men’s basketball coach Dan Monson.

A native of Coeur d’Alene, Don Monson devoted his life to the game, coaching in Cheney, Pasco, and Moscow before spending his later years in Spokane. He passed away recently at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that shaped generations of players, coaches, and families across the 509.

In his honor, the 509 Classic and Numerica Credit Union are establishing the Don Monson Scholarship Fund, donating $5,000 to the Hooptown Youth League. This gift will help ensure underserved youth across our region have the opportunity to participate in basketball at no cost to them or their families.

His influence lives on.
