IMPORTANT COMMUNITY NOTICE FROM WARD 1 COUNCILWOMAN TONNI CANADAY📢
Clarifying Our Town Borders: Spencer vs. Oklahoma City
Dear Spencer Neighbors,
I want to take a moment to address a common issue that often causes confusion in our community and in local news reports. Many residents who live near N. Westminster Road and E. Wilshire Boulevard—and other nearby areas—have a "Spencer, OK 73084" mailing address. Because of this, when accidents, fires, or other incidents happen at these intersections, local news channels often report that they happened "in Spencer."This is actually incorrect. These properties sit entirely within the city limits and emergency response jurisdiction of Oklahoma City, not Spencer. The confusion happens because the U.S. Postal Service routes mail based on delivery efficiency, not official town borders. While these properties use our ZIP code for mail, they actually pay taxes to, vote in, and receive emergency services (Police and Fire) from Oklahoma City.I have officially reached out to our local news stations (KOCO, KFOR, KWTV, and FOX 25) with maps , phone calls a formal press releases.
I am asking their assignment desks to use official county GIS maps instead of mailing addresses so our town's borders are reported accurately.Accurate reporting is vital for public safety, resource allocation, and keeping our community properly informed.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tonni CanadayWard 1 Councilwoman,
City of Spencer
