We would like to tell you a little about the FOB. In conjunction with the DCR, we co-host many events throughout the year to include: The First Day Hike, Tai Chi, Maple Sugaring, Winter Photo contest, Park Serve Day, Summer Concerts, The Navy Band, Fall Festival, Turkey Trot and pictures with Santa. These events are made possible through partnership with the DCR and support of our members. It is
through sponsorship, corporate/participant donations, and membership dues that fund all of these events. The Friends Group meets monthly to plan and prepare for these events. We are looking to grow our membership and volunteer base so it is important to us to hear from you about what your interests are and how you might to become more involved. The Friends of Breakheart, in cooperation with the General Electric Employee's Good Neighbor Fund, the Saugus River Watershed Council and the Department of Conservation and Recreation have constructrfed a full access nature trail at the reservation. As part of the Friends contribution to this project, we have purchased an all-terrain wheel chair for use at the reservation. This chair can negotiate the majority of trails at Breakheart and can also be taken into the water at the beach. Chair use is on a first come, first served basis. Inquiries may be made at the Visitors' Center. One of the latest additions to Breakheart is Bark Place. An area where dogs can run free and socialize. Built as a cooperative effort between the DCR and the Friends of Breakheart by reclaiming an abandoned parking lot, Bark Place provides a safe dog play environment in an area surrounded by tall hemlocks. Benches are provided for weary owners along with Mutt Mitts for pickup of doggy deposits and even a fire hydrant! Bark Place is located directly across from the Pine Tops picnic area. An easy walk from either park entrance. The Friends also send out a newsletter that can be emailed to you once you become a member. We are currently constructing a website that will soon be live! For any DCR questions, comments, concerns, compliments can go to DCR Community Relations at [email protected].
