Hi Tiffany, check out this find from The Great American Dig-it-all Treasure Hunt. The button circled in the picture is before cleaning it, obviously. The other items pictured are natural finds but, the button is my coolest button find ever. After careful cleaning I can read on the back "SCOVITLS DOUBLE GILT" . The button has stars and STILL some gold plating. Google yielded this info....

Scoville Double Gilt" refers to a high-quality brass button manufactured by the Scovill Company (often misspelled as Scoville) in the early-to-mid 19th century. The term specifically signifies that the brass button was coated with twice the legally required or standard amount of gold during the manufacturing process to ensure better durability and a longer-lasting, brighter shine.
Key details regarding "Scoville Double Gilt" buttons:
Manufacturer: Scovill Manufacturing Company, established in 1802 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Time Period: These buttons generally date from 1810 to the 1840s, often found on early American clothing and uniforms.
Process: Gilding involved mixing gold with mercury, applying it to a brass button, and heating it in a furnace. "Double Gilt" indicates a higher, more luxurious standard of this coating.
Quality Mark: The "Double Gilt" stamp on the back was a guarantee to the purchaser of superior quality compared to standard gilt buttons.
