I Am Sweet Briar Project

I Am Sweet Briar Project The project aims to create an exhibit for the 2016 KC Fringe Fest. 'I Am Sweet Briar' will use photos to show the college through the eyes of a student.

This project is done by Jesse Schaaf, Sweet Briar Class of 2015. I have always enjoyed taking photos; since I was a little kid using a tiny disposable camera. Fast forward to college and I finally had the chance to take Photography 1 my first semester of Senior year. I had so much fun taking pictures, developing film, and making prints! And more then anything, I loved taking photos of my gorgeous

campus and my amazing friends. March 3, 2015. It was announced that Sweet Briar College would be closing that August. The campus, the alumni, the community, were truly devastated by the news. But we also were no where near ready to let that be the end of it. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and our friends and family raised funds and awareness, took legal action, and just plain fought for three months to save our school. And We Won. June 22nd, 2015, it was declared that Sweet Briar College would remain open for at least the 2015-16 school year. We have continued to raise money and awareness and are still going strong to this day. This year we have had a record breaking number of applications, our one thousand. The purpose of this project is to create a visual arts exhibit for the KC Fringe Festival this summer. The title will be 'I Am Sweet Briar' and the medium will be photographs. I want to show my experience at Sweet Briar, the college through the eyes of a student. I hope to use facts about SBC and stories to help me do this. This page will help me show my journey, promote my exhibit, raise money, and ask for advice, support, and occasionally subjects to photograph when I make it back to Sweet Briar in April. Tell your friends. :)

I hang my first ever photography exhibit at Johnson County's Corinth Library this Thursday! I can't believe it's so close, and I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm so excited!

I received my exhibit location for the Johnson County Libraries this summer! I will have one piece in the group exhibit at the Central Resources library, but my main display will be at the Corinth Library! Both run from May 20 until August 21.

I am so grateful that I've been able to visit Sweet Briar this weekend to take pictures for my project! So far I've shot almost 5 rolls worth and I can't wait to get back in the dark room to start developing them!

It's always such a struggle trying to decide which picture to develop next!

Another of my favorite views on Sweet Briar's campus, the Boathouse.

Fun Fact: I took this picture while working on my final Photography 1 project, which was around the idea of a Post Apocalyptic World. Most pictures of the lake included Elizabeth Cobb '15 sitting on the dock.
