Neck construction. I’m very pleased with my fingerboard radius jig that makes quick and accurate work of cutting a 16 inch crown in the , cleaned up with a sanding caul. This little triangular wedge is the secret (🤫) to blending the headstock face with the end of a multiscale fingerboard without angling the headstock or squaring off the end of the fingerboard with an awkward bit of empty space behind the nut. A tricky jig holds the neck upright to route the truss rod spoke wheel adjustment notch in the heel for an FlexStrong double-action rod. Overall, the multiscale is my typical 6-string arrangement of 25-26 inches with neutral at the 12, fretted with jumbo nickel frets. The Near Equal Just Intonation scale layout gives different fret points for each string, so we chose to fret for the outside strings and offer true intonation points for the inside strings with glow dots, which Max is able to access very cleverly with a slide. The neck profile is a modified trapezoid, with a facet on the treble side, a relatively flat back, and rounded C bass side. Grip Lock tuners with barrel k***s grace the headstock. Working with the roasted maple from is a pleasure and smells delicious!

Next up on the build schedule was the rather tedious task of laying up the layers of the top and back plates. They are three layers of maple veneer, with the facing layer featuring the contrasting maple and walnut swoosh that is the signature of the Jessie Lynn. These were glued up in the 17 foot radius dish in a vacuum bag. All control holes and openings needed to be drilled and routed, and any visible surfaces were painted black, before gluing to the core.

The core of Max’s JLDC is some lovely, light Oregon red alder. Usually, the chambers are hollowed out with a router and template, but since this guitar has both top and back plates the chambers go right through. The tricky part is sanding a 17 foot radius into both sides to accept the arch of the laminated plates (next step).

The Jessie Lynn DC, like all of my models and variants, started with and idea and a sketch. Often I will make a full size cardboard cutout and leave it in the living room, or tape it to the back of a door I’ll pass frequently, with pencil, eraser, and sharpe nearby to make little adjustments. Guitars usually start as 7-strings, because it’s in the middle of the 6/7/8 dimensions. Fretboard templates come from FretFind2D, an excellent online scale calculator I’ve been using for over a decade. From there I’ll make routing templates. By the time I began conversations with Max about his JLDC NEJI, it already felt like a well worn design.

New guitar day for Max of ! And a new model release, as well. I would like to introduce you to the Jessie Lynn DC (Double Cut).

Max’s JLDC is packed with a number of Jayemar firsts:
- If the fretboard looks a little different, that’s because it features a NEJI (Near Equal Just Intonation) scale layout, and the constellation of dots represent finer intonation points that Max is able to access with a slide.
- The body core is my standard chambered alder, but the top and back are 3-ply laminated arched maple and walnut plates, with much of the center floating free from the core.
- Electronics include two of my hand-wound humbuckers, plus the GHOST piezo system.

Thanks, again, to Max for trusting me (and challenging me) to build a truly unique and spectacular instrument. I will be posting progress pics of this build in the coming days, so stay tuned.

Ah, 2024 in review. Overall, it was light on guitars, but full of adventure, learning, and time spent with family and friends.

Among other things… moved the kid into her first studio apartment in sub-freezing temps, built a guitar with way too many strings, enjoyed the island of Kauai, had another birthday, delivered aforementioned guitar with too many strings, watched a ridiculous amount of soccer, left a job of 25 years, had adventures on land and water in Idaho, punished my body with house maintenance, traveled north many times, started a new job, started a new guitar with a reasonable number of strings, met a new member of the family, and was reminded time and again that I am a lucky guy surrounded by amazing people.

Here’s to your 2025 🥂
