Today, the National Black Bear Festival joins our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent lives taken, the brave first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless heroes whose courage and sacrifice showed the strength of the American spirit.

🧸Happy National Teddy Bear Day from the National Black Bear Festival!🐻

This little black bear is giving us serious Velcro vibes, sticking to that tree like it’s no big deal!

The teddy bear got its name from President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt after a famous 1902 bear-hunting story. But here’s your National Teddy Bear Day reminder:

🧸 Teddy bears = hugs.
🐻 Black bears = NO hugs.

They may be adorable, but they’re wild animals—not stuffed toys. Respect them, give them space, and please . . . no bear hugs! 😉

I saw this cub dead on the side of the road this morning. One of the sad consequences of our growing black bear population in North Carolina is the inevitable highway collisions that have dramatically increased since 1970. In 1970 the North Carolina Wildlife Commission estimated our black bear population to have dwindled to about 2,000. That year there were only 2 reported bear highway fatalities. Through good management by the Wildlife Commission, today our bear population has made a dramatic comeback and is estimated to be over 20,000. But as a result, more bears are being hit on our highways. Black bear highway fatalities peaked in 2018 with 345 bears killed on our roads. The good news is, as you can see in the graph, the number has been falling.

Black bears are extremely difficult to see on the highway at night. Please keep a sharp eye out when driving through bear country.. Although they are more concentrated in the mountains and especially in the rural coastal counties, bear sightings have been reported in all 100 counties of North Carolina. Be safe out there and enjoy these magnificent animals!

We’re still looking back in awe at “Reflections on the Roanoke,” our spectacular fireworks show from this past June’s National Black Bear Festival!

The night sky came alive with brilliant bursts of color, creating an unforgettable display over the Roanoke. It was truly one of those festival moments that reminded us just how special it is to come together as a community and celebrate!

We loved sharing this incredible evening with all of you, and we hope you enjoy looking back at a few highlights from the show.

Dawn’s Lullaby

Black bears are remarkably skilled climbers. Their powerful limbs and curved claws help them scale trees to find food, escape danger, or rest above the forest floor. Younger bears are especially agile climbers, but adults can climb, too.

Resting in the branches also gives us a glimpse of just how adaptable black bears are to life in the wild.

🐻✨ Looking back at one of the brightest moments of the 2026 National Black Bear Festival!

This past June, the night sky over downtown Plymouth came alive during our drone show along the Roanoke River. Brilliant displays of light, color, and music transformed the waterfront into a nighttime spectacle and gave festivalgoers another reason to stay and enjoy the evening.

After a day filled with black bears, live music, food, family activities, exhibits, river adventures, and plenty of festival fun, the drone show brought everyone together along the waterfront for a memorable end to the night.

There’s something special about seeing downtown Plymouth packed with people while the Roanoke River provides the backdrop. Moments like this are what the National Black Bear Festival is all about—bringing people together, celebrating our community, and showcasing the special place we call home.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in June and helped make the 2026 festival such an unforgettable weekend. We hope the drone show left you with some great memories—and maybe a few great photos, too! 🐻✨
